- **Arlong one-shots Zoro AND Hatchan with a 'handful of water'** (page 6 villager-witness account, page 8 Arlong's own narration). Off-page between Ch. 87 and Ch. 88, Arlong intervened in the Zoro-vs-Hatchan duel and **dropped both** with a water-attack that made them 'cough up blood and collapse'. Villager-witness dialogue: *'I don't know. It looked like he just splashed them with water... but then they coughed up blood and collapsed!!'* / *'Whoa... what did that nasty shark do?'* / *'Was it all a dream!?'* Arlong's own narration (page 8 in close-up over the downed pair): *'A handful of water is all it takes. Such is the difference in strength between fish-men and humans. I can destroy weaklings like you without even touching them.'* The chapter installs **water-pressure-as-weapon** as Arlong's signature combat-feat (compounds with the Ch. 75 reef-move + cannonball-chomp pre-loads). Hatchan is **collateral damage** of his own captain's attack — installs **Arlong-doesn't-spare-his-own-officers-when-clearing-the-board** villain register. The Ch. 84-87 Hatchan-vs-Zoro duel terminates not by either combatant winning but by **captain-overrides-the-officer-duel**.
- Sanji French Culinary Attack Naming Convention
- **Sanji performed CPR on Luffy after retrieving him from Arlong's pool** (page 7). The Ch. 84 *Sanji-dives-for-Luffy* setup pays off **partially**: Sanji has Luffy on the pool-deck, performs mouth-to-mouth (*BREATHE!! ...!! PLEASE!! SPLUP!!*) while Luffy is *GLUB GLUB* — Luffy spits out water (*SPLUP!!*). Villagers/Nojiko around urging revival: *'Brother Cook!! Stay down!!'* / *'Did he move!?'* / *'Just a little more!!!'* / *'Come back to life!!! Please!!!'* Luffy is **back on the pool-deck but barely conscious and unable to free himself from the chained-stone** — by chapter's end he is back in the water (page 15 PLOOSH, Luffy underwater again with stone) and Sanji dives again. The chapter installs the **CPR + repeated-dive** rescue-rhythm — Luffy's survival depends on Sanji shuttling him air and never quite freeing him.
- Nami Slam-Sandals Approach Composition
- **Arlong canonizes that Nami has tried to kill him *many times* over the eight-year embedment** (page 11 — *BWAHAHAHAHAHA*). Arlong (looming mouth-close-up): *'Assassins... poison... ambushes... how many times did you try to kill me? In the eight years you've been with us...'* / *'You, of all people, should know that no mere human can kill me!!! And the result!? I'm still here, ain't I!?'* The chapter installs **Nami's prior multiple murder-attempts on Arlong** as established backstory — not a single-chapter outburst. Pre-loads the **lifelong-resentment-and-trapped-inside** register that the arc's climax will resolve. Forward-pattern: the *I've-tried-everything-and-he-can't-be-killed-by-mere-humans* doctrine installs the **need-for-a-non-human-killer** axis (Luffy, who is the *non-human* Devil Fruit user, becomes Arlong's structurally-required executioner).

- Usopp Egg Star Named
- **Usopp's pre-Arlong-Park action: defeated a generic fish-man near the tangerine grove** (pages 2-4). Cover-shot of Usopp's combat-feat with a new on-page-named technique: ***Usopp's Hammer*** + ***Usopp's Rubber Band of Doom*** (page 3, named four times in successive panels — *USOPP'S HAMMER!! USOPP'S RUBBER BAND OF DOOM!!! USOPP'S HAMMER!! USOPP'S HAMMER!!*). Massive boulder-projectile launched via stretched-band slingshot grammar (SHOOM / SPLA-SH!!). The fish-man dies of dehydration/asphyxiation on land (*WATER!! WATER!!! WATERRR!!!*), Usopp's *USOPP'S HAMMER* finishing-shot lands. Usopp surveys the corpse (page 4 — *'THWUMP... !!'* / *'I won!!'* / *'A fish-man...'*) and brags to Nojiko at the grove (*'I beat... I beat... a fish-man!!! Don't ever underestimate me!!!! Even I can win if I try!!! Did you see that, darn it!!?'*). The chapter installs the **rock-projectile-via-rubber-band** munition — a third entry in the Usopp-Star arsenal alongside Exploding Star (Ch. 72) and Egg Star (Ch. 72). Pre-loads the *Usopp-can-defeat-officer-tier-fishmen* register he claims at Arlong Park later (page 17 — *'Nami!! I beat... I beat... I beat one of Arlong's officers! Me!!!'*) — recent-chapter: Usopp may be **inflating** his kill from *generic mook* to *officer*, in his standard captain-tongue tactical-lie register.
- **Nojiko picks up Nami's straw hat and joins the fight** (page 5). After Usopp leaves, Nojiko (close-up, hand on a straw hat, *KRK*-creak SFX): *'I've done my crying!! And I've voiced my complaints!! My mind is made up!! I have to go... and join the fight!!!'* TMP TMP TMP TMP — Nojiko striding through Cocoyasi toward Arlong Park. The Ch. 80 *crying-and-complaint* phase ends; Nojiko escalates from *narrator-passive* (Ch. 80) to *combatant-active*. Installs **the second Cocoyasi character (after Genzo) to declare combat-readiness**. The arc's *village-uprising* is now multi-villager.
- **Cover-story Vol. 5: Koby-Helmeppo Chronicle of Toil — *Chore Boys Aboard Morgan's Prison Ship!!*** (page 1, title-page splash). Helmeppo in **prison-stripes** (black-and-white horizontal-banded shirt and pants) with **ball-and-chain** shackles, holding chains, on a Marine prison ship (*MARINE* lettering partly visible on the wall, ladder going up to upper deck, fellow chore-boys cackling in the foreground, Marine guards/sailors with their backs to the camera at the railings). The chapter installs Helmeppo as **escorting his arrested father Morgan on the prison-ship transit** — Morgan went from Captain (Ch. 4-6) to chore-detained prisoner being transported by Marines, and Helmeppo is the son-along-for-the-trip as chore-boy. Continues the **Vol. 2 (Ch. 84) Marine-base chore-boy** register with a **Vol. 5 prison-ship-transit chore-boy** specialization. Parallel-arc structure: Morgan's *captain-fallen-to-prisoner* trajectory rhymes with Krieg's *captain-fallen-to-disgraced-survivor* (Ch. 67-68). The Koby-Helmeppo cover-arc has now established the **Marines-as-corrective-institution** premise for both characters.
Arc: Arlong Park · Saga: East Blue · Volume: 10
Summary
Cover-story Vol. 5 of the Koby-Helmeppo Chronicle of Toil opens the chapter: Helmeppo in prison-stripes and ball-and-chain shackles aboard Morgan’s Prison Ship!!, the Marine vessel transporting his arrested father. Helmeppo is the son-tagged-along-as-chore-boy — extends the Ch. 84 Vol. 2 Marine-base chore-boy register to a prison-ship-transit specialization.
Cut to the tangerine grove outside Cocoyasi Village: Usopp has defeated a fish-man enemy using his slingshot with a massive boulder-projectile launched via Usopp’s Hammer + Usopp’s Rubber Band of Doom technique-naming sequence. The fish-man dies of dehydration on land (‘WATER!! WATERRR!!!’). Usopp brags to Nojiko (‘I beat… I beat… a fish-man!!! Even I can win if I try!!!’). At Nojiko’s grove, Nojiko — alone — picks up Nami’s straw hat, declares ‘I’ve done my crying!! And I’ve voiced my complaints!! My mind is made up!! I have to go… and join the fight!!!’ — and walks toward Arlong Park.
At Arlong Park (DADOOM): Zoro and Hatchan are both downed on the pavement. Off-page since Ch. 87, Arlong intervened in the Zoro-vs-Hatchan duel and dropped both with what villagers describe as ‘he just splashed them with water… but then they coughed up blood and collapsed!!’ Arlong narrates his own attack in close-up over the bodies: ‘A handful of water is all it takes. Such is the difference in strength between fish-men and humans. I can destroy weaklings like you without even touching them.’ Hatchan is collateral damage of his own captain’s clearing-the-board attack.
Sanji is performing CPR on Luffy (retrieved from the pool — Sanji dove for him per the Ch. 84 setup). Sanji vs. Arlong locks: Sanji’s named-attack ‘POITRINE TREADER!!!’ (French = chest-tread) is intercepted by Kuroobi (FWUP — Kuroobi enters his Sanji-pair combat); Arlong follows up with a BABMM palm-strike that levels Sanji. Inner-monologue calibration: ‘But he’s like a shotgun blast!!! So this is the power of a shark… even among the fish-men, he’s in a class by himself.’ / ‘This is like nothing we’ve faced so far!!’ Arlong: ‘Your lives are worthless. Go ahead and die.’
Nami arrives (DO ZOOOMM slam-sandals). ‘ARLONG!!!’ Village reaction: ‘Nami…’ / ‘Sister Nami!!’ Arlong (fake-paternal, ♥-eye, ‘Miss Nami…’): ‘What brings you here?’ Nami (deadpan): ‘I’ve come… to kill you!!!’ Arlong (BWAHAHAHA): ‘To kill me!? Assassins… poison… ambushes… how many times did you try to kill me? In the eight years you’ve been with us…’ / ‘You, of all people, should know that no mere human can kill me!!! And the result!? I’m still here, ain’t I!?’
Arlong delivers a second trap-deal (pages 12-13): rejoin the crew as the cartographer-officer, accept that Luffy/Zoro/Sanji die anyway, and Arlong will spare Coco Village. Genzo (off-panel): ‘That’s dirty!! He’s gonna keep Nami no matter what she decides!!’ Nami’s interior monologue (full-face sweating close-up): ‘If I say I’m Luffy and Zolo’s shipmate, everyone may get killed. But if I say I’m Arlong’s, all of the villagers will be spared!! Is it up to me to decide who lives and who dies!!?’ / ‘I have to believe in them!!!’
The chapter’s emotional summit: Nami (hero-shot, brightest panel, full-face under straw hat): ‘OKAY!!!! Fight and die… WITH ME!!!’ / ‘I’m sorry, everyone!!!’
The villagers explode (HOORAY!!! RAAAH!!!) with FIGHT FOR NAMI signs raised — the Ch. 72 Coco-Village endurance-vow collapses in cheer. Sanji dives back into the pool (PLOOSH) to retrieve Luffy again, as Luffy is back underwater (GLUB).
Usopp arrives (THWUMP, pose, slingshot drawn): ‘Don’t worry about it, you ugly bottom-feeder. Your problem stands in front of you.’ Arlong: ‘Dead man.’ Usopp: ‘I warned you about calling names… EGG STAR!!!’ SPLAT (rotten egg on Arlong’s face). Usopp swivels to the crew: ‘There you are!!! Fight all you like!!! I’ve got your back, Zolo!!!’ Villager reaction: ‘He’s alive!! What a dramatic entrance!! Brother Usopp! How brave!!!’ Usopp to Nami: ‘Nami!! I beat… I beat… I beat one of Arlong’s officers! Me!!!’ Kuroobi (FWUP, kicking the resurfaced Sanji): ‘You think I’d let you humans win!?’ (THWOOM). Sanji (going down again, GLUB): ‘I’m counting on you… You’re our last hope.’
Page 18 — Storyboard Presentation #14: rough sketch-page showing Luffy crying ‘ルフィ…!!’, Zoro: ‘おれの傷から触るな!!!’ (‘Don’t touch my scars!!!’), Luffy small in front of a Mihawk-like tall figure with cape, Zoro’s determined face ‘いくぞ’ (‘Let’s go’). The page revisits the Ch. 51 Mihawk-duel composition as storyboard meta-paratext — Oda showing the pre-pencil construction of the most-iconic Baratie-arc moment.
New reveals
- Arlong’s shotgun-blast / handful-of-water combat-tier installed on-page (pages 6, 8, 9). Arlong destroys Zoro AND Hatchan together off-panel with water-pressure, then BABMMs Sanji in a single palm-strike. Class-of-his-own among East-Blue fish-men.
- Hatchan is collateral damage of his own captain (page 6). The Ch. 84-87 Hatchan-vs-Zoro duel terminates by captain-overrides-the-officer-duel — installs Arlong-doesn’t-spare-his-own-officers-clearing-the-board villain register.
- Sanji performed underwater rescue + CPR on Luffy (page 7). The Ch. 84 dive-for-Luffy setup pays off — Sanji has him on the pool-deck briefly (BREATHE!! …!! PLEASE!! SPLUP!!) before re-engaging combat and Luffy goes back in the water.
- Sanji’s Poitrine Treader (French = chest-tread) is named on-page (page 8). Continues the Ch. 73 Sanji French Culinary Attack Naming Convention French-culinary lexical grammar — second named attack in the convention after Collier (Ch. 73).
- Kuroobi enters the Sanji-vs-Kuroobi combat-pair operationally (pages 8, 17). Kuroobi intercepts Poitrine Treader on page 8 and re-engages Sanji on page 17. The Ch. 75/84 Sanji-vs-Kuroobi forward-prediction now locks in.
- Nami declares stated intent to kill Arlong to his face (page 10 — ‘I’ve come… to kill you!!!’). The Ch. 80 Curse you, Arlong!!! / PLUP PLUP tear-event escalates into on-page lethal declaration.
- Arlong canonizes Nami’s prior many murder-attempts over eight years (page 11 — ‘Assassins… poison… ambushes… how many times did you try to kill me?’). Nami’s resentment-and-resistance is backstory-deep, not single-chapter.
- Arlong installs no mere human can kill me doctrine (page 11 — ‘You, of all people, should know that no mere human can kill me!!!’). Pre-loads the non-human-killer-required axis — Luffy (rubber/Devil-Fruit user, structurally non-human in Arlong’s species-class frame) becomes the required executioner.
- Arlong delivers a second trap-deal (pages 12-13): rejoin-and-Cocoyasi-spared. Genzo reads the trap: ‘He’s gonna keep Nami no matter what she decides!!’
- Nami chooses fight and die with the crew (page 14, brightest panel: ‘OKAY!!!! Fight and die… WITH ME!!!’). Nami’s eight-year deal-system exits — this is the Straw Hat recruitment-acceptance chapter.
- Villagers explode in FIGHT FOR NAMI uprising (page 15). The Ch. 72 Coco Village endurance-vow collapses in cheer; village-uprising-as-arc-climax activates.
- Nojiko picks up Nami’s straw hat and joins the fight (page 5). Second Cocoyasi villager (after Genzo) to declare combat-readiness.
- Usopp arrives at Arlong Park as surprise-cavalry, hits Arlong with Egg Star (pages 16-17). The Ch. 72 Egg Star is redeployed against the arc-villain. Usopp’s bravado-cover for actual brave-act fires.
- Usopp’s combat-feat outside the Park: defeated a generic fish-man via Usopp’s Hammer + Usopp’s Rubber Band of Doom (pages 2-4). Boulder-projectile slingshot, third Usopp munition-tier (after Exploding Star, Egg Star). Fish-man dies of dehydration on land.
- Cover-story Vol. 5: Helmeppo in prison-stripes-and-ball-and-chain on Morgan’s Prison Ship!! (page 1). Continues Vol. 2 Marine-base chore-boy register into prison-ship-transit specialization.
- Storyboard Presentation #14 backmatter (page 18). Rough-sketch revisits Ch. 51 Mihawk-vs-Zoro composition — meta-paratext showing the duel’s pre-pencil construction. Includes the ‘Don’t touch my scars!!!’ line foreshadowing the arc-spanning Zoro-chest-scar-as-sacred-wound doctrine (Wano: ‘Wounds on the back are a swordsman’s shame’ + Thriller Bark: ‘Nothing happened’).
Foreshadowing seeds planted
Payoffs (seeds from earlier chapters that resolve here)
Mentions / appearances
- Usopp — primary actor in opening + closing arcs of the chapter. Defeats fish-man at tangerine grove via Usopp’s Hammer + Usopp’s Rubber Band of Doom (pages 2-4). Brags to Nojiko (‘I beat… a fish-man!!! Even I can win if I try!!!’). Arrives at Arlong Park as surprise-cavalry (pages 16-17), hits Arlong with Egg Star, declares ‘I’ve got your back, Zolo!!!’ Inflates kill to Nami (‘I beat one of Arlong’s officers!’). The chapter’s brave-coward-thesis fires.
- Nojiko — at tangerine grove. Picks up Nami’s straw hat, declares ‘I’ve done my crying!! …I have to go… and join the fight!!!’ (page 5). Walks toward Arlong Park. Second villager (after Genzo) to declare combat-readiness. Reaction-line for Sanji’s CPR (‘Did he move!?’).
- Nami — arrives at Arlong Park (page 10 — DO ZOOOMM). Declares stated intent to kill Arlong (‘I’ve come… to kill you!!!’). Confronted with Arlong’s second trap-deal (pages 12-13). Internal monologue (page 14): ‘Is it up to me to decide who lives and who dies!!? I have to believe in them!!!’ Chooses fight-and-die-WITH-ME (page 14, brightest panel of chapter, hero-shot under straw hat). Apologizes to villagers (‘I’m sorry, everyone!!!’). The chapter’s recruitment-acceptance moment.
- Sanji — primary combatant at Arlong Park. Performs CPR on Luffy (page 7 — ‘BREATHE!! …!! PLEASE!! SPLUP!!’). Attacks Arlong with Poitrine Treader (page 8), intercepted by Kuroobi (FWUP). Levelled by Arlong’s BABMM shotgun-blast palm-strike (page 9). Inner-calibration: ‘This is like nothing we’ve faced so far!!’ Dives again to retrieve Luffy (page 15, PLOOSH). Kicked by Kuroobi (page 17, THWOOM). Final line (going under, GLUB): ‘I’m counting on you… You’re our last hope.’
- Luffy — pulled from water by Sanji; receives CPR (page 7); spits water (SPLUP!!); back in pool by page 15 (GLUB). On-page line (page 17 — to Sanji about freeing himself): ‘Nope, no can do. I’m just too weak.’ The chapter’s central rescue-object — still chained, still in water, still the structurally-required executioner who cannot yet act.
- Zoro — downed on pavement throughout the chapter (page 6, page 17 background). Off-page between Ch. 87 and Ch. 88 was dropped by Arlong’s water-attack alongside Hatchan. The Ch. 84 borrowed-blade three-sword-style + restated never-lose-again vow are now in combat-failure-state — Zoro lost via captain-overrides-the-officer-duel grammar (a category his vow grammar does not handle). The chapter does not show Zoro re-engaging; he is reduced to unconscious-rescuable-prop register.
- Hatchan — downed on pavement next to Zoro (page 6). The Ch. 84-87 Hatchan-vs-Zoro duel terminates by Arlong’s captain-overrides-the-officer-duel. Hatchan is collateral damage of his own captain’s clearing-the-board attack — the chapter installs the Hatchan-arc-exit register at the moment of his own captain’s betrayal. Forward-resonance: Hatchan’s Ch. 491+ Sun Pirates / Sabaody redemption arc’s Arlong-was-bad-and-I-knew-it reflection traces here.
- Arlong — primary villain on-page throughout. One-shots Zoro AND Hatchan with water-pressure (page 6 villager-witness, page 8 own narration). Drops Sanji with BABMM shotgun-blast palm-strike (page 9). Greets Nami’s arrival with Miss Nami… ♥ (page 10). Reveals Nami’s prior multiple murder-attempts (page 11). Doctrine: ‘no mere human can kill me’ (page 11). Delivers second trap-deal (pages 12-13). ‘Are you my ship-mate… well, Nami!!? …or theirs?’ (page 13). Reaction to Nami’s fight-and-die declaration: ‘So you all want to die, eh?’ (page 15). Egg-Starred in face by Usopp (page 16). Status at chapter close: face wet with rotten-egg, looming over the combat, fully in command.
- Kuroobi — enters combat for the first time on-page (page 8). Intercepts Sanji’s Poitrine Treader (FWUP). Re-engages Sanji at page 17 (FWUP / THWOOM kicking Sanji underwater). The Ch. 75/84 Sanji-vs-Kuroobi forward-prediction now operationally locks in. Status at chapter close: actively combat-paired with Sanji, who is sinking.
- Yosaku / Johnny — pavement-side reaction-witnesses (page 6 — ‘Whoa… what did that nasty shark do?’ / ‘Was it all a dream!?’). Villager-side throughout.
- Genzo — at Arlong Park as villager-side witness; speaks the chapter’s trap-recognition line (page 14 — ‘That’s dirty!! He’s gonna keep Nami no matter what she decides!!’).
- Bell-mère — referenced via the inheritance-of-the-straw-hat composition (page 5 — Nojiko picks up a straw hat; the hat is a multi-generation prop — Bell-mère’s family’s, Nami’s, possibly the same one Bell-mère wore in flashbacks).
- Helmeppo — chapter cover-story star (page 1). Prison-stripes + ball-and-chain shackles on Morgan’s Prison Ship.
- Koby — implied off-page in cover-story title (KOBY AND HELMEPPO’S CHRONICLE OF TOIL VOL. 5). Not visible in the page-1 splash.
- Morgan — implied off-page in cover-story (his prison ship; he is the prisoner being transported). Not visible on-panel.
- Arlong Pirates — at officer-engagement tier. Hatchan downed (collateral). Choo killed Ch. 84 (still off-page status). Arlong + Kuroobi actively combat-engaged.
- Straw Hat Pirates — at near-collapse tier. Luffy chained-and-sinking, Zoro down, Sanji repeatedly hit and going down. Usopp arrives as cavalry. Nami formally accepts crew membership.
- Marines — cover-story setting (Morgan’s Prison Ship, page 1).
- Arlong Park — chapter’s primary combat-setting (pages 6-17 except page 5 transition).
- Cocoyasi Village — pages 2-5 (tangerine grove / village street transition to Arlong Park).
- Conomi Islands — implied arc-region geographic container.

Meta-paratext callback to the Ch. 51 chest-wound mid-Arlong-arc-climax.
Open questions raised
- Will Luffy free himself from the chained-stone and act as the arc’s required non-human killer? Arlong’s no mere human can kill me doctrine pre-loads the non-human-killer-required axis; Luffy as Devil Fruit user is structurally the required executioner. The chapter ends with Luffy still chained underwater and Sanji saying ‘You’re our last hope’ — pending the next-chapter Luffy-freedom mechanism.
- Will Sanji-vs-Kuroobi resolve before Sanji drowns? Sanji is in the water at chapter close (GLUB), Kuroobi just kicked him under, Luffy is chained. The combat-geography is fully against the Straw Hats.
- Will the village uprising actually engage in combat? FIGHT FOR NAMI signs are up; villagers cheer; Nojiko is on her way. But Luffy historically refuses villager-help (the I-fight-alone-for-my-friends register). Pending: how the village-uprising integrates with the Straw-Hat combat.
- Did Usopp actually defeat an officer-tier fish-man or merely a generic mook? The chapter implies the latter (no officer-card on the page-2-3 fish-man) but Usopp claims the former at Arlong Park. recent-chapter: Usopp’s captain-tongue-tactical-lie register is operating; the actual kill is generic-mook-tier.
- What is Hatchan’s status — dead, dying, KO? The villager dialogue ‘coughed up blood and collapsed’ implies severe injury. Hatchan’s Ch. 491+ Sun Pirates / Sabaody redemption requires him to survive — pending his arc-survival mechanism.
- What does Morgan’s Prison Ship route look like, and where is Koby in the cover-arc? Vol. 5 places Helmeppo on the ship transporting Morgan; Koby is implied in the title but not visible. Pending: the cover-arc’s continuation reveals Koby’s parallel-trajectory.
- What is the ‘Don’t touch my scars!!!’ line in the storyboard’s narrative status? The Ch. 51 Mihawk-duel did not have this line on-page; the storyboard sketch may be either (a) a meta-paratext callback to a retroactively-imagined moment, or (b) seeding the doctrine for a forward chapter. recent-chapter: the doctrine recurs across the series (Thriller Bark, Wano) — Ch. 88’s storyboard is likely the doctrine-seeding paratext.
