Summary

Cover-story Vol. 5 of the Koby-Helmeppo Chronicle of Toil opens the chapter: Helmeppo in prison-stripes and ball-and-chain shackles aboard Morgan’s Prison Ship!!, the Marine vessel transporting his arrested father. Helmeppo is the son-tagged-along-as-chore-boy — extends the Ch. 84 Vol. 2 Marine-base chore-boy register to a prison-ship-transit specialization.

Cut to the tangerine grove outside Cocoyasi Village: Usopp has defeated a fish-man enemy using his slingshot with a massive boulder-projectile launched via Usopp’s Hammer + Usopp’s Rubber Band of Doom technique-naming sequence. The fish-man dies of dehydration on land (‘WATER!! WATERRR!!!’). Usopp brags to Nojiko (‘I beat… I beat… a fish-man!!! Even I can win if I try!!!’). At Nojiko’s grove, Nojiko — alone — picks up Nami’s straw hat, declares ‘I’ve done my crying!! And I’ve voiced my complaints!! My mind is made up!! I have to go… and join the fight!!!’ — and walks toward Arlong Park.

At Arlong Park (DADOOM): Zoro and Hatchan are both downed on the pavement. Off-page since Ch. 87, Arlong intervened in the Zoro-vs-Hatchan duel and dropped both with what villagers describe as ‘he just splashed them with water… but then they coughed up blood and collapsed!!’ Arlong narrates his own attack in close-up over the bodies: ‘A handful of water is all it takes. Such is the difference in strength between fish-men and humans. I can destroy weaklings like you without even touching them.’ Hatchan is collateral damage of his own captain’s clearing-the-board attack.

Sanji is performing CPR on Luffy (retrieved from the pool — Sanji dove for him per the Ch. 84 setup). Sanji vs. Arlong locks: Sanji’s named-attack ‘POITRINE TREADER!!!’ (French = chest-tread) is intercepted by Kuroobi (FWUP — Kuroobi enters his Sanji-pair combat); Arlong follows up with a BABMM palm-strike that levels Sanji. Inner-monologue calibration: ‘But he’s like a shotgun blast!!! So this is the power of a shark… even among the fish-men, he’s in a class by himself.’ / ‘This is like nothing we’ve faced so far!!’ Arlong: ‘Your lives are worthless. Go ahead and die.’

Nami arrives (DO ZOOOMM slam-sandals). ‘ARLONG!!!’ Village reaction: ‘Nami…’ / ‘Sister Nami!!’ Arlong (fake-paternal, ♥-eye, ‘Miss Nami…’): ‘What brings you here?’ Nami (deadpan): ‘I’ve come… to kill you!!!’ Arlong (BWAHAHAHA): ‘To kill me!? Assassins… poison… ambushes… how many times did you try to kill me? In the eight years you’ve been with us…’ / ‘You, of all people, should know that no mere human can kill me!!! And the result!? I’m still here, ain’t I!?’

Arlong delivers a second trap-deal (pages 12-13): rejoin the crew as the cartographer-officer, accept that Luffy/Zoro/Sanji die anyway, and Arlong will spare Coco Village. Genzo (off-panel): ‘That’s dirty!! He’s gonna keep Nami no matter what she decides!!’ Nami’s interior monologue (full-face sweating close-up): ‘If I say I’m Luffy and Zolo’s shipmate, everyone may get killed. But if I say I’m Arlong’s, all of the villagers will be spared!! Is it up to me to decide who lives and who dies!!?’ / ‘I have to believe in them!!!’

The chapter’s emotional summit: Nami (hero-shot, brightest panel, full-face under straw hat): ‘OKAY!!!! Fight and die… WITH ME!!!’ / ‘I’m sorry, everyone!!!’

The villagers explode (HOORAY!!! RAAAH!!!) with FIGHT FOR NAMI signs raised — the Ch. 72 Coco-Village endurance-vow collapses in cheer. Sanji dives back into the pool (PLOOSH) to retrieve Luffy again, as Luffy is back underwater (GLUB).

Usopp arrives (THWUMP, pose, slingshot drawn): ‘Don’t worry about it, you ugly bottom-feeder. Your problem stands in front of you.’ Arlong: ‘Dead man.’ Usopp: ‘I warned you about calling names… EGG STAR!!!’ SPLAT (rotten egg on Arlong’s face). Usopp swivels to the crew: ‘There you are!!! Fight all you like!!! I’ve got your back, Zolo!!!’ Villager reaction: ‘He’s alive!! What a dramatic entrance!! Brother Usopp! How brave!!!’ Usopp to Nami: ‘Nami!! I beat… I beat… I beat one of Arlong’s officers! Me!!!’ Kuroobi (FWUP, kicking the resurfaced Sanji): ‘You think I’d let you humans win!?’ (THWOOM). Sanji (going down again, GLUB): ‘I’m counting on you… You’re our last hope.’

The chapter ends with Luffy still chained underwater and Sanji saying ‘You’re our last hope’ — pending the next-chapter Luffy-freedom mechanism.
  • Will Sanji-vs-Kuroobi resolve before Sanji drowns? Sanji is in the water at chapter close (GLUB), Kuroobi just kicked him under, Luffy is chained. The combat-geography is fully against the Straw Hats.
