Profile

The sacred, forbidden land of Skypiea — “the domain of the Kami” (God), called “Godland” as of Ch. 241 — “the realm of the omnipotent kami Enel” and “a place nobody’s allowed to go.” Shown as a forest of colossal trees standing on solid ground, bordering Angel Island and reachable by waver. The one place in Skypiea you “must never go, no matter what” (Ch. 240 pp. 16–17). Why it is forbidden, and what authority “the Kami” wields over it, are not yet explained.

As of Ch. 241, entering it is treated as a crime against Enel, punishable by destruction: Enel’s hunters/priests run down “guerrillas” (Shandia) here, and Enel rains “Heaven’s Judgment” strikes that flatten the forest (“the Varse”). See Heaven’s Judgment, Skypiea Entry Fee and Criminal System.

Etymology

Hidden in the kanji. “Upper Yard” is written 神の島 (Kami no Shima — “God’s Island” / “Land of God”) with the English アッパーヤード (“Upper Yard”) supplied as furigana. The sound the reader gets is the neutral “Upper Yard,” but the characters spell out Godland — exactly the epithet the arc uses (“Godland Skypiea”, “the domain of the Kami”). The sacred, forbidden meaning is encoded in the writing itself, not the pronunciation — a quiet Oda tell that this is divine, consecrated ground.

“Yard” carries the sense of an enclosed consecrated precinct (cf. churchyard) — the god’s walled-off ground “above/apart from” the residential Angel Island.
