- **Sanji confirms underwater-rescue-tactic: kick the rock to pieces so Luffy can swing into action** (page 2 — *'If I can just kick the rock around Luffy's legs to pieces, he can swing into action!!!'*). The Ch. 84 dive-for-Luffy / Ch. 88 CPR setup escalates: Sanji's plan is now **free-Luffy-by-smashing-the-stone**, not just *keep-Luffy-breathing*. Sanji's *Black Leg* identity as **stone-smashing-tier kick** is here pre-loaded on-page — the same kick-grammar will recur at Whisky Peak (Ch. 110+ bounty-hunter blocks), Skypiea (Ch. 273+ cloud-architecture), and Whole Cake (Ch. 870+ candy-wedding wall). Forward-pattern: the Sanji-as-anti-architecture-tier kick installs.
- Usopp Brave Coward Thesis
- **Arlong sees through the distraction and dives under the pool with Luffy's stone** (page 12 — *'I told you. This is OUR game... and we're winning.'* + *PLOC!!* underwater-drag). Arlong abandons the Usopp-engagement at the surface, leaps into his own pool to **physically tow Luffy's chained-stone deeper** — converting Sanji's *kick-the-rock-loose* tactic into an *out-of-reach* tactic. Continues the Ch. 88 *no mere human can kill me* doctrine — Arlong's combat-instinct is to **leverage his fish-man-underwater-superiority** the moment a non-water threat appears. The chapter installs **Arlong-as-aquatic-tier-manipulator**, not just *aquatic-tier-fighter* — he uses the environment strategically. Sanji's surface-side plan now requires **going to Luffy** rather than *freeing Luffy*.
- **Sanji dives after Arlong/Luffy, retrieves Luffy and the stone, surfaces and demands Luffy go beat Arlong WHILE still in the chained-stone** (pages 12-13 — *'That was close!!! [...] You got us into this mess in the first place!!! Now get us out of it, crap-kid!!! Go beat that crap-shark to death!!!'*). The chapter's combat-pivot: Sanji **does not free Luffy** from the stone here — he hands Luffy back the agency-of-action *with the stone still attached*. Luffy's response: *'Yes!!'* (page 13). The pivot installs **Luffy-acts-even-while-chained** as the structurally-required-non-human-killer reframe: Arlong predicted *no mere human can kill me*, and Luffy operationalizes by being **the user who fights while drowning**. Forward-pattern: every later Luffy-arc-climax involves Luffy fighting through an explicit limitation (Krieg-aftermath exhaustion, Crocodile-fatigue, Lucci-impossible-injury, Magellan-poison, Kaido-Drum-Island Gear-4 cooldown) — the *act-anyway-while-impaired* register installs here at Ch. 89.
- **Sanji throws Luffy + stone airborne back over Arlong Park; Luffy *'I'M BACK!!!!'*** (page 14 — full-page *SHOOOM!!! / SPLOOSH...!!!* with Luffy and the chain-stone airborne, *'DO O M SH'* impact composition). The Ch. 84 dive-rescue setup pays off completely: Sanji-rescue → CPR (Ch. 88) → underwater-retrieve (Ch. 89) → **airborne hand-off back to the battle** (Ch. 89). The Sanji-as-Luffy-water-fail-safe role is here in **full operational deployment** — five rescue-installments end with a launch-back-to-combat that returns control of the arc-climax to Luffy. Forward-pattern: Sanji-as-Luffy-launching-platform recurs (Ch. 308+ Davy Back, Marineford-aftermath Ch. 580+) — this is the first instance.
- **Villagers greet Luffy with relief: *'It's the rubber boy!!!'* / *'BROTHER LUFFY!!!'*** (page 15 — landed airborne, the village reacts). The Ch. 88 *FIGHT FOR NAMI* villager-uprising panel is now joined by **Luffy-recognition-as-village-savior** registration. Villagers acknowledge Luffy on first-name terms (*'Luffy!!'* from Nami; *'BROTHER LUFFY!!!'* from villagers; *'The rubber boy.'*) — Luffy is here **canonized as the village's recognized champion**, not just an out-of-towner. Pre-loads the Ch. 95+ village-celebration sequence.
- Luffy Gum-Gum Bullet First Named
- **Arlong's *I'd better finish him off right now* react: Arlong recognizes Luffy as the priority threat** (page 11 — *'RRMMNBB!! / I'd better... finish him off right now!!!'* — pointing/aim at the surfaced Luffy). The chapter installs **Arlong's combat-IQ-tier**: he reads the Luffy threat correctly and **rates Luffy as priority-one over Sanji/Zoro/Usopp combined**. Continues the Ch. 88 *no mere human can kill me* doctrine but adds the **threat-prioritization** register — Arlong fears Luffy specifically. The Ch. 87/88 dunked-and-chained Luffy was *not a threat* in Arlong's frame; the surfaced-and-acting Luffy IS.
- **Luffy's *'I'm gonna kill him!!!'* / *'JUST WARMING UP'* declarative** (page 17 — full-page grin under straw hat, *KRAK KRAK* knuckle-crack, *'YEP. JUST WARMING UP.'*). Luffy's arc-climax-engagement declarative — the brightest-panel-of-the-chapter framing parallels the Ch. 88 page-14 Nami *OKAY!!!! Fight and die WITH ME!!!* hero-shot. The two consecutive chapters' summit-panels (Nami's commitment + Luffy's combat-engagement) compose the **Nami-recruitment-acceptance-and-arc-villain-engagement** narrative-summit pair. *'Just warming up'* against an opponent who shrugged off Gatling installs **Luffy-tier-headroom-still-undeclared** — pre-loads forward-arc Luffy-tier escalation.

Summary
Cover-story Vol. 6 of the Koby-Helmeppo Chronicle of Toil opens (page 1): Helmeppo (ball-and-chain shackles) and Koby (cleaning swords, glasses up) in the prison-ship’s storage hold beneath a DEATH PENALTY!? / ! skull-and-crossbones sign. Title: ‘CHORE BOYS ABOARD MORGAN’S PRISON SHIP VOL. 6: WORK, WORK, WORK!!’
At Arlong Park: Sanji is on the pool-deck performing the “If I can just kick the rock around Luffy’s legs to pieces, he can swing into action!!!” plan (page 2). Sanji canonizes the Devil-Fruit-on-water doctrine on-page: “Not only do people with Devil-fruit powers lose them underwater… but the ocean also takes away their will to live.” Sanji deduces (correctly) that someone must be helping Luffy survive underwater. Zoro stands guard on the deck (“Brother Zolo!! Hold fast!!”). Usopp, mid-villager: “It’s Brother Cook!!! I don’t know what he’s doing down there, but we’re all counting on him now!!!”
Usopp draws fire onto himself: “WHAT BRAVERY!!” — “HEY, ARLONG!!! OVER HERE!!! I’ll distract him!!!” (page 3). Arlong (suspicious, holding the egg-soaked face): “You got an interesting face, Mouse-Umi”-style ambiguity — actually engages with Usopp via “Correction, it’s MY game, and I won’t allow any cheating!!! So why shouldn’t we!? This is our game!!” exchange.
Hatchan recovers from the Ch. 88 captain-water-attack and re-engages Zoro: Roing!! slingshot-style stretched rubber band — “Since you’re standing in front of me… you must want to die, Roronoa Zolo!!!” (page 3) — then six-sword stance, KLANG!! against Zoro’s two-sword block: “Fool. The reason I’m so proud of this nose is because it can’t be shattered!!! Even if you had real power… you’d be lucky just to scratch it!!!” (page 4). Sanji intervenes: “Leave the rest to me!!! Get back!!! I can shatter that rock. Just one good kick!!!” (page 5) — but Hatchan reads it as combat-engagement and launches OCTOPUS-FRITTER FRENZY!!! (page 5 / page 8 — SWOG!! / POW / DOOM six-octopus-arm pummel-flurry).
Sanji’s counter-line — shaking off the assault — “I MEANT OCTOPUS BOY. I WASN’T TALKING ABOUT ME!!” (page 7) — confirms Sanji had not been talking to Hatchan but to Zoro. Hatchan reads Sanji’s “would’ve kept some of the wounds from opening up!!!” as directed at himself: “Is that your idea of a joke? You’re probably right.” (page 7) — Hatchan re-engages.
Arlong reads the situation and decides: “I’d better… finish him off right now!!!” (page 11) — pointing at the surfaced Luffy. Then turns to dive: “I told you. This is OUR game… and we’re winning.” (page 12) — PLOC!! Arlong leaps into the pool to physically drag the chained-stone (and Luffy) deeper. Sanji (sweating reaction-panel): “That was close!!! KA-BMM!!!” — Sanji dives after them (SPLOOSH) and retrieves Luffy + stone.
Sanji surfaces with Luffy still chained to the stone, dumps him onto the pool-deck (THO DOOM / CLUB CLUB): “Hey. You got us into this mess in the first place!!! Hey!!! Now get us out of it, crap-kid!!! Go beat that crap-shark to death!!!” Luffy: “YES!!” (page 13). Sanji then throws Luffy + the entire chained-stone airborne back over Arlong Park (page 14 — full-page SHOOOM!!! / SPLOOSH / DOOM SH with Luffy and stone airborne, “I’M BACK!!!!”).
Luffy lands at the Park (page 15) to villager recognition: “It’s the rubber boy!!!” / “PHEW…” / “LUFFY!!” (Nami) / “BROTHER LUFFY!!!” (villagers) / “Idiot!!!” / “It’s about time…” / “The rubber boy.” (Genzo).
Luffy engages Arlong directly: KA-BO M!!! / BULLET!!! (page 16) — punch lands but does not break Arlong. Luffy follows with WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM!!! / GATLING!!! (page 16) — sustained flurry. Villagers gasp (OOOOO). Result: “It didn’t work!!! Noooo!! Did you… do something?” (page 17). Arlong (frame-shifting, KLAK KLAK / SHIVER!!!! / DRMMMMBB): “I’M GONNA KILL HIM!!!” — winding up his counter-strike.
Final panel (page 17): Luffy, full-face grin under straw hat (KRAK KRAK knuckle-crack): “Yep. Just warming up.”
Page 18: SBS Q&A column final installment — dream-of-building-bridge advice, knock-knock joke, Patty’s I’m turnipy saucy = I’m terribly sorry food-pun explanation, Usopp’s-nose-bone question (‘Whoa!! It does bend!!! Here ends SBS!!’).
New reveals
- Sanji canonizes the Devil-Fruit-on-water will-to-live-loss doctrine on-page (page 2). First time the underwater-Devil-Fruit-user-loses-will-to-live dimension is articulated. Pre-loads Impel Down submerged-cell handling and Fishman Island depth-effects doctrine.
- Sanji deduces Genzo-tier underwater rescue is happening (page 2 — ‘So if that brat is still alive, then someone… must be helping him!!!’) — combat-reading at field-commander tier. Inference is correct (Genzo per Ch. 88 + ongoing village support); installs Sanji-as-tactical-reader register.
- Sanji’s plan: kick the chained-stone to pieces so Luffy can swing into action (page 2). The Ch. 84-88 dive-for-Luffy / CPR sequence escalates from keep-Luffy-breathing to free-Luffy-via-rock-smash. Black-Leg stone-smashing-tier kick is pre-loaded on-page.
- Hatchan’s Octopus-Fritter Frenzy (Hachi’s Eight-Tentacle Octo-Fry / Tako-Yaki) technique first named (pages 5, 8 — OCTOPUS-FRITTER FRENZY!!! / SWOG / POW DOOM). First on-page Hatchan named-attack; six-octopus-arm pummel-flurry. Etymologically takoyaki — pre-loads the Sabaody takoyaki-stand identity (Ch. 491+).
- Hatchan’s six-sword stance + un-shatterable nose (page 4 — KLANG!! + ‘The reason I’m so proud of this nose is because it can’t be shattered!!!’). The Ch. 73 Hatchan Octopus Fish-Man First Mate six-arms-design here gets its first on-page six-sword-style combat-grammar. Hatchan’s un-shatterable nose boast is immediately built-to-break (Pearl Zero-Blood-Loss Boast Built To Be Broken template) — Sanji’s Ch. 90+ engagement will break it.
- Usopp deliberately draws fire from Sanji (page 3 — ‘HEY, ARLONG!!! OVER HERE!!! I’ll distract him!!!’). Brave-coward thesis fires in intentional-distraction register — Usopp’s combat-utility-tier installs as distraction/harassment specialist.
- Usopp’s ‘Correction, it’s MY game and I won’t allow any cheating’ re-narration (page 3). Early instance of the Usopp re-narration-as-power register that pays off long-form at Enies Lobby Sogeking.
- Arlong dives under his own pool to drag Luffy-stone deeper (page 12 — PLOC!!). Aquatic-tier manipulator, not just fighter — uses environment strategically. Continues no-mere-human-can-kill-me doctrine via I-will-leverage-water-against-rescuers tactic.
- Sanji dives after Arlong, retrieves Luffy and stone, throws them airborne back over the Park (pages 12-14). Sanji-as-Luffy-water-fail-safe role in full operational deployment; first instance of Sanji-as-Luffy-launching-platform (recurs Davy Back Ch. 308+, Marineford-aftermath Ch. 580+). Luffy still chained to stone — the act-anyway-while-impaired register installs.
- Sanji refuses to free Luffy from the stone; hands Luffy agency-of-action with the impediment attached (page 13 — ‘Now get us out of it, crap-kid!!! Go beat that crap-shark to death!!!’). The arc’s climactic combat-pivot. Luffy: ‘YES!!’ Forward-pattern: every later Luffy arc-climax fights-through-impairment.
- Luffy ‘I’M BACK!!!!’ airborne re-entry over Arlong Park (page 14, full-page composition). The Ch. 84 dive-rescue setup pays off. Villager recognition (page 15 — ‘It’s the rubber boy!!!’ / ‘BROTHER LUFFY!!!’) canonizes Luffy as the village’s champion.
- Luffy stacks Bullet + Gatling against Arlong in rapid succession (pages 16-17 — KA-BOM / BULLET!!! / WHAM x7 / GATLING!!!). First on-page two-technique-stack-combo. Neither delivers decisive damage — installs Arlong-tier > Krieg-tier by a discrete combat-grammar margin (the Ch. 65 Gatling that broke Krieg’s wootz here merely tickles Arlong).
- Arlong reads Luffy as priority-one threat above all other Straw Hats (page 11 — ‘I’d better… finish him off right now!!!’). Threat-prioritization register added to the no-mere-human-can-kill-me doctrine. Arlong fears Luffy specifically.
- Luffy ‘Yep. Just warming up.’ declarative under straw hat hero-shot (page 17, brightest panel of chapter). Mirrors Ch. 88 page-14 Nami OKAY!!!! Fight and die WITH ME!!! — composes the two-chapter recruitment-acceptance + arc-villain-engagement narrative-summit pair. Just-warming-up against the opponent who shrugged off Gatling installs Luffy-tier-headroom-still-undeclared.
- Cover-story Vol. 6: Helmeppo and Koby in prison-ship storage hold (page 1). Helmeppo shackled and exhausted; Koby cleaning swords with focus. Roles diverge structurally in this cover — Koby is becoming a Marine, Helmeppo is doing time as a Marine prisoner. Pre-loads Koby’s Ch. 432+ Marine-career payoff. DEATH PENALTY !? skull-and-crossbones-with-punctuation sign on the wall.
- SBS Q&A final installment (page 18). Confirms Patty’s food-pun verbal-tic; jokes about Usopp’s nose-flexibility; ‘Here ends SBS!!’ signoff.
Foreshadowing seeds planted
Payoffs (seeds from earlier chapters that resolve here)
Mentions / appearances
- Luffy — central figure of the chapter’s combat-pivot. Underwater for pages 2-13; airborne-thrown back to Arlong Park page 14 (‘I’M BACK!!!!’); engages Arlong directly pages 15-17 with Bullet + Gatling stack; final-panel hero-shot ‘Yep. Just warming up.’ (page 17). The chapter’s structurally-required non-human-killer takes the field for the first time.
- Sanji — primary actor throughout. Articulates the Devil-Fruit-on-water-loses-will-to-live doctrine (page 2). Plans rock-smash kick for Luffy-stone. Engaged by Hatchan’s six-sword stance and Octopus-Fritter Frenzy (pages 5-8). Dives after Arlong-Luffy underwater (page 12, SPLOOSH). Retrieves Luffy + stone (page 12). Throws Luffy airborne over Arlong Park (page 14, SHOOOM). Final-side: still on the pool-deck/edge. Sanji-as-Luffy-water-fail-safe role in full operational deployment.
- Zoro — on the pool-deck holding the line against Hatchan (pages 2-4); blocks Hatchan’s six-sword stance with two-sword KLANG!! (page 4); pivots to ‘GO, ZOLO!’ (page 4) as the ‘I’ll shatter that nose’ counter; continues to engage Hatchan through pages 5-8 (collateral to Sanji’s Octopus-Fritter Frenzy). Zoro is restored from the Ch. 88 downed-state but still injured; combat-engagement is continuous-pressure rather than decisive.
- Usopp — chapter-opening distraction actor. ‘I’ll distract him!!!’ (page 3), draws Arlong’s attention; ‘Correction, it’s MY game and I won’t allow any cheating!!!’ re-narration register. Villager-side acknowledgement ‘WHAT BRAVERY!!’ on-page. Usopp combat-utility-tier installs as distraction/harassment specialist.
- Hatchan — primary opposing combatant for Sanji-and-Zoro pages 2-8. Recovers from Ch. 88 captain-water-attack. Stretched-slingshot-rubber-band fakeout (page 3). Six-sword stance + un-shatterable nose boast (page 4). Octopus-Fritter Frenzy named technique (pages 5, 8). Comic-stupidity-as-character-tell continues (‘I MEANT OCTOPUS BOY. I WASN’T TALKING ABOUT ME!!’ page 7 — Hatchan misreads Sanji’s directive). Status at chapter close: still engaged with Sanji combat-pair.
- Arlong — primary villain throughout. Reads Luffy as priority-one threat (page 11 — ‘I’d better… finish him off right now!!!’). Dives into own pool to drag Luffy-stone deeper (page 12 — PLOC!!). Surfaces to find Luffy back on the battlefield (page 14). Engaged by Luffy’s Bullet (page 16) and Gatling (page 16) — endures both (‘It didn’t work!!! Noooo!! Did you… do something?’ page 17). Frame-shifts to ‘I’M GONNA KILL HIM!!!’ counter-windup (page 17). Status at chapter close: combat-engaged with Luffy, undamaged by Bullet+Gatling stack.
- Kuroobi — present at chapter open as the Ch. 88 Sanji-engagement combatant (off-panel after Sanji dives underwater). Re-emerges late-chapter as Hatchan re-engages Sanji.
- Nami — villager-side throughout. On-panel reaction ‘LUFFY!!’ page 15 — first-name call to Luffy registers Nami’s full-recruitment-acceptance from Ch. 88 in continuing-effect.
- Nojiko — villager-side; reaction-panel on Luffy’s airborne return.
- Genzo — villager-side; ‘The rubber boy.’ page 15 — restrained line that reads as understated-confidence (Genzo is the village’s prior-most-skeptical-of-the-pirates voice and here speaks of Luffy as the rubber boy with a sense of recognized-arrival rather than dismissal). Genzo’s framing shift (Ch. 70+ skeptic → Ch. 89 receiving) traces here.
- Yosaku / Johnny — villager-side reaction-witnesses throughout.
- Helmeppo — cover-story Vol. 6 star (page 1). In striped chore-boy uniform with ball-and-chain shackles, sitting exhausted on barrel in prison-ship storage hold. DEATH PENALTY !? sign on wall.
- Koby — cover-story Vol. 6 second figure (page 1). In striped chore-boy uniform, no shackles, glasses up, polishing or inspecting swords. Marine-aspirant posture (contrast with Helmeppo’s prisoner-coerced posture).
- Morgan — implied cover-story prisoner (the Morgan’s Prison Ship). Not on-panel in this chapter.
- Patty — referenced in SBS Q3 (page 18) — Oda confirms Patty’s ‘I’m turnipy saucy’ food-pun verbal-tic.
- Arlong Pirates — Arlong + Hatchan + Kuroobi actively combat-engaged. Choo killed Ch. 84 (still off-page).
- Straw Hat Pirates — all five members on-page (Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Nami, Usopp). The full crew of five is in the same combat-frame for the first time since Ch. 41 (the Going Merry departure from Syrup Village). Crew-of-five-vs-arc-villain combat-engagement is fully assembled.
- Marines — cover-story setting (Morgan’s Prison Ship, page 1).
- Arlong Park — primary combat-setting throughout (pool-deck for pages 2-14, gate/Park-courtyard for pages 14-17).
- Cocoyasi Village — implied via villager-presence and the FIGHT FOR NAMI / BROTHER LUFFY reception register.
- Gomu Gomu no Mi — Luffy’s Bullet (page 16) and Gatling (page 16) deployments. First two-technique-stack instance.

Open questions raised
- Can Arlong be defeated by Luffy at all, given Bullet + Gatling did not break him? Arlong absorbed both signature Luffy-techniques and immediately frame-shifted to I’M GONNA KILL HIM!!! counter. The Ch. 88 no mere human can kill me doctrine still holds combat-grammar-wise — Luffy will need either a new technique, a new mechanism, or environmental leverage. Forward-prediction: Luffy’s defeat-of-Arlong will involve Arlong Park-as-weapon (the spiral-emblem prop-tell building itself, per Arlong Park Spiral Emblem / Arlong Park Shark-Architecture) — Luffy will leverage the architecture against the architect.
- Can Luffy fight while still chained to the stone? The Ch. 89 act-anyway-while-impaired register installs — but the actual combat-mechanics of Luffy-with-leg-stone against an opponent who can shrug off Bullet+Gatling are unproven. Forward: either Luffy frees himself (Ch. 90+), or the stone becomes a weapon-element, or both.
- Will Hatchan be broken / killed / withdrawn by Sanji? The un-shatterable nose boast is installed (page 4) under the Pearl-template built-to-break grammar. Sanji-vs-Hatchan resumes; the Ch. 90+ break should pay off the boast.
- Will Koby’s Marine-aspirant trajectory diverge formally from Helmeppo’s prisoner-coerced trajectory? The cover-story Vol. 6 visualizes the divergence-in-posture (Koby polishing swords vs. Helmeppo shackled-exhausted).
