Nola the snake · alive · the ~400-year-old guardian serpent of Shandora / Upper Yard

Profile

The giant guardian serpent of Upper Yard / Shandora, named “Nola” on-page for the first time in Ch. 292. In the Jaya flashback (“one year before Noland’s return”), Calgara greets the snake by name — “Hey there, Nola! You’ve made yourself right at home here in the ruins, haven’t you?!” (p. 12); the snake answers “Chu la la ♪”. The same giant serpent is the present-day creature the Straw Hats encounter on Upper Yard (it swallowed Luffy and Nico Robin and was referred to only as “Kashigami’s child”), making Nola a ~400-year-old living link between the buried City of Gold and the present arc.

Arc-by-arc updates

Skypiea — sleeps through the looting (Ch. 301)

  • The “sweet-tempered snake” sleeps through the Straw Hats’ gold heist; her belly holds the salvaged gold and a Tone Dial the crew recovers (pp. 7–8). Usopp and Luffy marvel at the dial; Nami warns how “irritating” the snake is when awake. Referred to by behavior, not name, this chapter.

Skypiea — present in the ruins during the bell-ring (Ch. 299)

  • The giant snake is shown with open mouth among the Shandora ruins as the bell tolls (p. 9). Non-speaking background presence at the climax.

Skypiea — present-day named appearance (Ch. 296)

  • The story-present serpent is shown to be Nola, her belly now full (pp. 6–9). Roused by the Giant Jack tremors, she gives the “Tulala/Julalala” bell-call — intercut with the Calgara flashback of being taught it (“Let’s make the sound of the bell you love so much reach all the way to Noland!”) — positioning her as the surviving messenger of the bell-song to Mont Blanc Noland. See Song of the Island, The Noland Legend and the City of Gold.
  • (MERGE NOTE: the 0296 reader filed this as a ## Create [[Characters/Nola]] — but the note already existed (minted @0292). Folded in here; no duplicate created.)

Skypiea — present-day serpent surfaces (unnamed) (Ch. 293)

  • The present-day giant serpent of Upper Yard / Shandora surfaces (p. 16, “WOOOO…”) amid Enel’s destruction of Skypiea. NOT named “Nola” on-page this chapter — no name is given to the serpent here.

Skypiea — named on-page in the Calgara/Noland flashback (Ch. 292)
