Predicted: the rule’s forward-extension — Thousand Sunny’s lion-figurehead carries Franky’s signature aesthetic (the lion is the Franky-built ship’s animal, just as the sheep is the Merry-built ship’s animal). The Straw Hats’ ship-figureheads are portraits of their builders. The Going Merry’s emotional weight as a character in later arcs (the Water 7 funeral, the Iceburg rebuild) is also downstream of this rule — the figurehead is Merry’s face, the ship’s death is Merry’s death.

Why this matters

The rule is one of Oda’s quietest visual conventions: ships are portraits of their builders. The figurehead-as-builder-portrait pattern is the visual analog of the ship-named-for-builder pattern (Merry The Steward Names The Ship) — both the name and the face of the ship belong to the builder. The Straw Hats sail two ships in the series; both follow this rule. Future-Claude should look for figurehead-portrait connections in every later ship debut.
