What is the inherited “will” carried by the D-clan, and what does the initial literally stand for?

The question

What is the Will of D. — what does the initial carried by the D. clan mean?

Leading theories

D. = Davy

Direct inheritance pact from Davy Jones, who promised vengeance against Imu. Leading post-1164 reading.

D. = Dawn

Older theory — D-clan are agents of “the dawn” of a new world (Luffy’s home is Dawn Island; the first pirate crew was called “Dawn” in some readings). Now considered partially compatible: Davy’s will brings the dawn.

D. = a sideways smile

Roger, Ace, Whitebeard all died smiling. Symbolic, not letter-based.

D. carriers are will-bearers, not bloodline

Inheritable by oath, not birth — explaining how Teach (Davy’s grandson per 1162-64) and Luffy (Joy Boy’s heir) both carry it.

Resolution

Partially resolved — the “D.” is confirmed as a widely-scattered hidden initial marking a people cast as the natural enemies of the World Government’s “gods,” though what the letter actually stands for has never been spoken on-page.

  • Powerful figures across the world — up to the Five Elders themselves — treat the “D.” as a known, feared category and a recurring omen of “checkered fate,” not a coincidence (Ch. 594, Ch. 798).
  • The D. are taught, in the world’s dark history, as “the natural enemies of the gods” — the Celestial Dragons — a people whose very philosophy opposes them, first spelled out by Corazon (Ch. 764, Ch. 768).
  • The initial spans many otherwise-unrelated bloodlines — Roger, Ace, Luffy and Garp, Law, Blackbeard, Rocks D. Xebec, the giant Jaguar D. Saul, Ohara’s Clou D. Clover, and the concealed Nefertari D. line (Ch. 576, Ch. 957, Ch. 1120, Ch. 1085).
  • The World Government fears the blood enough to hunt Roger’s line to extermination (Ch. 551) and to censor the “D.” out of Luffy’s printed name (Ch. 1053).
  • In the newest, still-unconfirmed chapters the leading reading ties the D. to Davy D. Jones and the hunted “Davy Clan,” Rocks’s bloodline — the World Government’s God Valley target found “after 800 years” (Ch. 1159, Ch. 1164).

Still open: What the initial literally stands for has never been stated — Robin, Rayleigh, and King Cobra all asked directly and were left unanswered (Ch. 507, Ch. 1084); Vegapunk’s broadcast was jammed at the exact moment it would have named it (Ch. 1117).

Still open: Whether the “D.” passes by bloodline or by an inherited will or oath.
