Joy Boy was an individual living person of the Void Century — the author of the Fish-Man Island apology poneglyph, who made and broke a promise to the island; the royal legend holds that someone will one day fulfill it in his stead (Ch. 649 , Ch. 967 ).
Vegapunk’s broadcast fixes him in history: born some 900 years ago into the advanced ancient kingdom, the first man ever called a pirate, who fought “like the Sun God Nika” with a body that stretched and contracted (Ch. 1114 , Ch. 1115 ).

Elbaf’s Harley couples Nika to every world-transformation and to two prior world-destructions; Nika “wears white clouds, white hair/clothes and jolly laughter” and is feared by “the great and mighty” — a register that maps onto Luffy ’s Gear-5/Nika form and the Joy Boy lineage. The Iron Giant Emet Luffy for Joy Boy , apologizes for failing to “make you king,” and reacts to Luffy’s “Monkey D. Luffy .” A closing flashback shows a hat-silhouetted child (strongly implied = Joy Boy) who “tied a knot of the greatest Haki” into Emet’s body to be released “when the time is right” — “I’ll save you all the way from the past!!” — i.e. the Conqueror’s Haki Emet just unleashed to save the crew is Joy Boy’s, reaching across the Void Century. The Iron Giant addresses Luffy as “Joyboy ” and pledges to fight for / protect him (pp. 11–14); Luffy, delighted the robot can talk, does not recognize the name — “It says it wants to protect someone… named Joyboy!! New Joy Boy facts from the broadcast: he was “a pirate ” (p. 3); he led a faction “so robust” the 20-kingdom Alliance “had no other choice” but war (p. 4); his enemy was “the precursor to the World Government” (pp. 3–4); and the Void-Century war “came to a close with the defeat of Joy Boy ” (p. 9). Vegapunk ’s broadcast names the “main character” of the Void-Century story: a man born into an impossibly advanced kingdom 900 years ago who, “like the Sun God Nika spoken of in Elbaph legend ,” fought “with a body that stretched and contracted .” “His name was JOYBOY … and he was the very first man on this sea to be called a pirate!!! ” The in-world historical record itself now links Joy Boy ↔ Nika ↔ a rubber/stretching body — strong support for the Joy-Boy-as-original-Nika-wielder reading (cf. Ch. 1111 p. 19 — the iron giant names Joy Boy and apologizes

The Void-Century Iron Giant (Joy Boy’s friend) stirs/reactivates to Luffy /Nika’s drum rhythm “Doom-dut-da-da” — the ancient construct responds specifically to the Nika liberation-rhythm, tightening the Joy-Boy ↔ Nika ↔ ancient-weapon resonance. Wano citizens circulate a rumor that the man who defeated Kaido is named “Joy Boy ” (p.7) — the awaited-liberator title attaching to Luffy in popular legend, days after the victory.
Ch. 1049 — Kaido frames Joy Boy as “the man who beats me”
Kaido tells King that Joy Boy is “the man who shows up to beat me in the future” (p.6, p.16). With Luffy (the awakened Nika fruit, 1043–1044) landing the decisive blow on Kaido in the same chapter (p.14–15), Kaido’s premonition is fulfilled in real time. Also ties Oden ’s open-the-country dream and Yamato ’s knowledge of the name into the prophecy chain.
Ch. 1046 pp. 2–3 — Zunisha hears the rhythm and names Joy Boy directly
As the “Doom Dut Da Da” beat thuds across Onigashima, Zunisha weeps in recognition: “Oh, Joyboy. Joyboy. How long it’s been… since I heard this rhythm… I cannot help but feel that fate is at work. My heart is dancing.” The first present-day, direct Zunisha → Joy-Boy beat (1044 came filtered through Momonosuke ). Ch. 1045 — Luffy syncs his heartbeat to the drums of liberation to sustain the awakened form
The drum rhythm (“DOOM-DUT-DA-DA”) pulses through Onigashima and Luffy consciously syncs his heartbeat to it to keep fighting (pp. 14-15) — the on-page beat of the liberation drums that accompany the awakened Nika fruit (Gomu Gomu no Mi ).
Ch. 1044 p. 2 — Momonosuke (via Zunisha) names Luffy “Joy Boy”
Hearing Zunisha , Momonosuke realizes “Luffy is… Joy Boy?!” — the first in-story figure to identify Luffy with Joy Boy . The same chapter reveals Luffy’s fruit as the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika (the Sun God; see Sun God Nika , Gomu Gomu no Mi ), tightening the Nika↔Joy Boy↔Luffy link.
Ch. 1040 p. 15 — Zunisha was “a companion of Joyboy”

Ch. 1036 p.4 — Kaido measures the world he is building against “Joyboy”
In flashback, Kaido asks King (Alber): “You think it’s Joyboy?! Is the world I’m creating… really the one you wished for?” King defers — “legends are legends, that is all… my life belongs to you.” Another on-page sign the Emperor of the Beasts frames his project around the Joy Boy legend. Ch. 1014 p. 3 — Kaido weighs Luffy against the Joy Boy standard
Watching the defeated Luffy fall into the sea, Kaido concludes “you couldn’t be Joyboy… either, it seems. ” The word “either” implies Kaido has tested earlier candidates against the same benchmark and dismissed them — the most explicit on-page sign that the Emperor of the Beasts personally awaits/seeks the figure named Joy Boy . Ch. 968 p. 7 — Oden ties Wano’s closed borders to “the day Joyboy appears”
Returning home, Oden declares Wano “must open its ports… before the day that Joyboy appears!!! ” — the first on-page coupling of Wano’s isolation policy to Joy Boy’s awaited return (the same dying command later relayed Ch. 819 ). Companion “promised day” beats this chapter: the whales await “the day the two sovereigns shall meet again” (p. 4) and the Sea Kings count down to the next Mermaid Princess’s birth (pp. 4–5). Ch. 877 — the Mink–Kozuki “dawn of the world” wait
Pedro tells Carrot that the Mink people and the Kozuki Clan have “awaited for centuries” the ones who will “guide us to the dawn of the world” — naming Luffy ’s crew (p. 12). The Dawn/Romance-Dawn liberation motif tied to a millennium-old cross-people prophecy, voiced by a dying man who spends his life on Luffy (he self-detonates against Perospero to keep the crew alive, pp. 16–17). The dawn motif recurs around the Straw Hats : the dying mink Pedro proclaims they “will one day guide the world to a new dawn ” (p. 11), and a raving Prison-Library prisoner cries “the dawn of the world is nigh!! I must return home!!!” (p. 10). Thematic recurrence of the promised-dawn / liberation imagery (cf. Romance Dawn) around Luffy , not a direct identity clue — filed as recurring dawn motif. Ch. 819 p. 2 — Oden reached Raftel with Roger and “learned the secrets of the world”
Kozuki Oden reached Raftel with Gold Roger and “learned the secrets of the world,”Rayleigh ) who reached the final island and read the true history (p. 2). Ties the Kozuki Clan and Wano to the road to the One Piece. Oden deliberately left his retainers NO secrets (p. 3); his one dying command was to open Wano’s borders (pp. 4–7).
Ch. 649 pp. 17-18 — Joy Boy was a PERSON of the Void Century who made (and broke) a promise to Fish-Man Island
King Neptune tells Nico Robin that the Forest of the Sea Poneglyph’s message “was meant for the Mermaid Princess on the island at the time… who lived on the surface during the 100-year void… so, at least 800 years ago. Joy Boy is a person. ” The stone is Joy Boy’s apology for breaking a promise made with Fish-Man Island ; per the royal legend “someone will come along to fulfill the promise in Joy Boy’s stead ” (the contents of the promise unclear). Ch. 0145 reveals that the X-cross on Chopper’s pink top-hat is Dr. Hiriluk’s emblem — it appears on Hiriluk’s chest, on his white pirate flag, on a banner-flag stuck into his doctor’s bag, and on the flag Chopper carries in flashback. Chopper wears the hat because the hat is his father’s flag in costume form . The chapter extends the pattern of Straw Hat = inherited mentor-mark (Luffy’s straw hat from Shanks; Sanji’s apron-flame from Zeff; Usopp’s slingshot-lineage from Yasopp) to Chopper.
