Chapter 576: The Great Pirate Edward Newgate

Summary

Blackbeard’s crew arrives at Marineford aboard the colossal giant San Juan Wolf, escorting four “erased” Level 6 escapees from Impel Down — Catarina Devon, Avalo Pizarro, Vasco Shot — plus the renegade Head Jailer Shiryu of the Rain. Blackbeard explains the long con: he only ever wanted the Warlord seat as a key to open the Gates of Justice and breach Impel Down, and now discards the title. The mortally tired Whitebeard charges him to avenge Fourth Division Commander Thatch (“you murdered your own brother!!”), but Teach’s Yami Yami no Mi now nullifies the quake powers on contact, dragging Whitebeard in with Black Hole and Black Vortex; Whitebeard still pummels him bare-handed (“overconfidence and carelessness… those are your weaknesses”) and quake-smashes his face, before his failing heart staggers him and the Blackbeard Pirates riddle him with gunfire. In a flashback to Roger’s final days, Roger offers Whitebeard the route to Raftel and muses on the recurring “D.”; in the present Whitebeard answers across time — bloodlines can be severed but their flames are never extinguished; someone will inherit Roger’s will (and someday do the same for Ace); the One Piece, when found, will turn the world upside down. He shouts to the watching world that the One Piece does exist, naming the Great War to come and the one who will shoulder centuries of history. His last words reveal what he truly wanted — a family — before he dies on his feet. The closing narration: even with half his face gone he never fell, bearing 267 sword wounds, 152 bullets, 46 cannon blasts, and not one wound on his back.
