Chapter 103: The Whale

Summary

After surviving the Reverse Mountain current and being swallowed by Laboon, the Straw Hats emerge inside the whale’s stomach — only it doesn’t look like a stomach. It looks like a painted-sky resort, complete with palm tree, lighthouse-cottage, and a deck-chair occupant. They meet Crocus, the eccentric 71-year-old “keeper of the Twin Cape lighthouse” who claims they’ve invaded his personal resort. Crocus reveals the whale’s pain: Laboon has been ramming his head against the Red Line for years, crying toward Reverse Mountain — waiting for a “friendly bunch of pirates” who came down the mountain with him long ago. While the crew is processing this, two new strangers ambush them from inside the whale: Mr. 9 (top-hat / crown / bat-wielder) and Miss Wednesday (blue-haired, princess-coded, with a cannon). They want Laboon’s flesh for their village — enough meat to feed it for two or three years. The chapter ends mid-conflict with Luffy committing to defend Laboon (”…YOU’LL NEVER HARM LABOON!! AS LONG AS I LIVE…”). It is the first canonical appearance of Princess Nefertari Vivi (under the alias Miss Wednesday), the first canonical appearance of Baroque Works as a named entity, and the species-lore introduction of the Grand Line’s largest creature.

WEDNESDAY.” The Mr-Number + Miss-Day-of-Week pair-format that will define the next ~110 chapters is canonized here in its first appearance.
