- Name meaning
- 海王類 (Kaiōrui) = literally 'Sea-King species/class' — 海王 (kaiō) 'sea king' + 類 (rui) 'class/kind'. The VIZ rendering 'Neptunians' (emphasized again in 0546 p. 9, 'full of the big Neptunians') points to Neptune, the Roman sea-god. The Japanese carries a built-in pun: 海王 (kaiō, 'sea king') is the same compound as 海王星 (Kaiōsei) = the planet Neptune, lit. 'sea-king-star' — so Kaiōrui literally reads as a Neptune-species. The sea-god naming dovetails with the Ancient Weapon Poseidon (the Greek sea-god) that commands them — a name-encoded thread tracked in Ancient Weapons.

Profile
Enormous marine creatures of wildly varied morphology — from the coastal serpent that bit off Shanks’s arm in Ch. 1 to the island-swallowing leviathan (“Island Eater”) near Little Garden (Ch. 101, Ch. 129). Their in-world species name is Neptunians. They nest in the Calm Belt, where the absence of wind and current combined with their density renders the sea impassable to ordinary navigation.
