Summary

Luffy and Koby arrive at the Marine base town (Shells Town) where the legendary “Pirate Hunter” Roronoa Zolo (Zoro) is rumored to be imprisoned. The town flinches at the mere sound of Zolo’s name. Luffy peeks over the base wall and finds Zolo tied spread-armed to a wooden cross in the courtyard, ragged from nine days of exposure but unbroken. Zolo offers a trick deal — “untie me and I’ll give you the bounty of my next catch” — which Luffy and Koby refuse. A small girl (Rika) climbs the fence to deliver hand-made rice balls. Zolo roughly tells her to leave, but Helmeppo — Captain Morgan’s spoiled son — arrives, stomps the rice balls, orders the girl thrown over the fence, and gloats that he intends to publicly execute Zolo in three days despite his standing one-month survival promise. Luffy catches the falling girl. Zolo, alone with Luffy, eats the dirt-soaked rice balls whole and asks Luffy to tell the girl they were delicious. By chapter’s end, having seen both Helmeppo’s cruelty and Zolo’s hidden honor, Luffy declares to Koby: “I’m going to ask Zolo to join my crew!!!”
