Summary

The chapter opens 26 years ago at Punk Hazard: an aged archaeologist begs the young government scientist Vegapunk to study the Void Century, recounting that he once watched a man “with the name of D” — his own older brother — killed without warning simply for declaring his birth name, and confessing his true name is Clou D. Clover, who survived only by lying. Vegapunk refuses to help and promises to forget it. Four years later (22 years ago) the lab’s scientists gleefully relay Ohara’s Buster Call, Clover’s death, and the single child (Nico Robin) who escaped; Vegapunk mourns. His narration frames the present: “history is told by the winners… and the voices of the losers at the bottom of the sea are so very faint.” In the present, the Straw Hats fight to launch off Egghead — Atlas strikes Lilith to short out her access so Lilith can be carried to safety, then flies off to remove the obstacle: the horse-form Five-Elder blocking the Sunny’s launch. Brook fires the Sunny’s Coup de Burst. The reawakened Iron Giant (Emet) rises, names Luffy “Joyboy,” vows to fight for him, and shields Vegapunk’s still-broadcasting message — until the snake-Gorosei “Peter” crushes it (“That’s a 900-year-old weapon!”). Atlas gives the ship one last suicidal boost (“Extra service, on the house”) and is destroyed. The Sunny clears the water; Vegapunk’s recording reaches its conclusion — “my view of our future is thus!!!” — and a narration turns to Gol D. Roger’s voyage, while Emet decides the moment is right to “use it.”

• Clou D. Clover. Professor Clover of Ohara is revealed (in flashback) to bear the “D.” — true name Clou D. Clover (p. 3). He is a member of the Will of D.
• Clover’s murdered D-brother. Clover saw an older brother — “a man I was born and raised with” — killed without warning purely for “declaring the name they were given at birth”; Clover lived only because he lied about his name (p. 3).
• Clover ⇄ Vegapunk, 26 years ago. Clover sought Vegapunk’s help to study the Void Century at Punk Hazard; Vegapunk declined: “I will not help you with this… and I’ll forget what you just said” (pp. 2–3).
• Emet = a 900-year-old weapon. The Iron Giant is explicitly called “a 900-year-old weapon” (p. 15); it speaks, recognizes Luffy as Joyboy, and pledges to protect/fight for him (pp. 11–14).
• Luffy doesn’t know Joy Boy. Asked, Luffy says he doesn’t know who “Joyboy” is (pp. 12–13).
• Atlas destroyed. Atlas sacrifices herself to boost the Sunny to safety; “Atlas is gone!” / “Now the only Dr. Vegapunk left in the world…” (pp. 17–18).
• Vegapunk = “the Stella.” A Gorosei refers to Vegapunk’s broadcasting body as “the Stella” (p. 18); the recording reaches its conclusion (p. 19).
