First numerical canonization of Roger’s death-date relative to the manga’s present.
Why this matters
The number 22 calibrates every later age/timing detail in the series:
- Luffy’s age (17 at series-start, so born ~5 years after Roger’s execution)
- Ace’s birth (~22 months after Roger’s death, per forward-canon)
- Rocks-Pirates-era (~38 years before manga-present)
- Ohara buster-call (~22 - X years for Robin’s age)
- Vegapunk’s research timeline
The 22 years anchor is the first numerical time-scale of the Great Pirate Era delivered on-page. Before Ch. 99, Roger’s execution was canonically the past but un-anchored numerically. Smoker’s matter-of-fact phrasing locks the era-clock.
