The claim
Imu's @1188 recantation — 'IT IS CLEAR... THOU ART NOT JOY BOY!! ...JOY BOY WOULD NEVER BE THIS WEAK!!' — is a deliberately staged reversal that Oda will reverse again while Imu and Luffy are still engaged: Imu will name Luffy 'Joy Boy' a second time, or explicitly concede the Joy-Boy return, off the back of a power escalation by Luffy. The recantation's stated criterion is STRENGTH, not identity ('would never be this weak'), which is a promise that the identity re-lands the moment the strength does. Corollary: Imu's flat 'JOY BOY IS ALREADY DEAD' (@1188 flashback) is denial, not intelligence — a thing Imu needs to be true rather than knows to be true.

The claim

Reasoning

The contributing techniques.

parallel-arc-structure. Recognise → recant → re-recognise is the shape Oda has already run on this exact pairing at a smaller scale: Imu speaks to Joy Boy as a returned acquaintance at Ch. 1181 and Ch. 1187 (Imu Speaks To Joy Boy As A Returned Acquaintance), then withdraws it. Withdrawal immediately after the first on-page utterance of a name the story spent 1,100 chapters withholding is not a closing move; it is a deferral.

dialogue-from-dead-character. The claim’s whole hinge is a quoted criterion. Imu does not say “thou art someone else” — Imu says Joy Boy “would never be this weak.” The vault’s Imu/Joy-Boy stack is built almost entirely from Imu’s own unprompted utterances (Imu Once Told A Caller Claiming To Be Joy Boy That Joy Boy Is Already Dead, Imu Recants Luffy As Joy Boy Because Joy Boy Would Never Be This Weak, Imus Unfinished Ye Are Both Groups Nika And Niddhoggr, Imu Knows Luffys Whole Sibling Trio Naming Ace And Sabo) — Oda’s chosen delivery vehicle here is Imu talking himself into positions.

negative-space. Imus Heart Pounds At The Name Joy Boy and Pattern - Imu Personally Recognizes Joy Boy record the tell the recantation is supposed to paper over: Imu’s body answers the name before Imu’s mouth does (Ch. 1122, Ch. 1179). The story has shown us the involuntary reaction; the voluntary denial arrives afterwards. That ordering is the author telling us which one to believe.

prop-tell. Imu Slashes Teech And Luffy Posters As Davy Jones And Joyboy (Ch. 1179) — Imu identified Luffy as Joyboy by wanted poster, alone, unobserved, long before the face-to-face. A private identification is not a mistake a villain makes and then corrects; it is a conviction he later suppresses in front of witnesses.

chekhov-explicit. Ch. 1189 then gives Imu perfect intelligence on Luffy’s family — Sabo the Revolutionary, Ace “slain by the Navy,” “an ill-mannered trio of siblings” (pp.6–7). Imu has dossier-level knowledge of exactly who Luffy is. “Thou art not Joy Boy” is therefore not an information failure; it is a judgement, and judgements get revised.
