Who/what is Imu, why do they sit on the once-Empty Throne, and what do they want?

The question

Who — or what — is Imu, the figure on the Empty Throne the world was told does not exist?

Leading theories

Imu = ancient demon entity who possessed Nefertari D. Lily

Lily-vessel theory explains the lone sword, Imu’s fixation on Vivi (“I desire… …Vivi…” — Ch. 1179), and the body-hopping. Plurality fan view post-1179.

Imu is the original Devil Fruit user / source of Devil Fruits

The katakana “Akuma no Mi” suggests Imu’s power is the prototype/root of all Devil Fruits — explaining Abyss Covenant immortality grants and animating buildings into homie-like creatures.

Imu is a Lunarian or pre-Lunarian sky-being

Horns, wings, tan skin, white hair = Lunarian morphology. Ties Imu to King’s race and Moon-origin lore.

Imu is a place-bound spirit (Klabautermann / yokai class)

Bound to Mary Geoise (or the original Ancient Kingdom-as-ship). Explains the Mary Geoise weakness — powers tied to a place, not a body.

Resolution

Partially resolved — the once-”empty” throne at the heart of the world does hold a hidden sovereign, now named and shown on-page, though its true nature stays sealed.

  • The Five Elders kneel to and serve a hidden sovereign seated above them — one able to strike any name from history — established when the Gorosei bow before the shadowed figure on the throne (Ch. 908); the seat itself, ringed by the founders’ weapons, is introduced as the “Empty Throne” the world was told none may occupy (Ch. 907).
  • The sovereign is named St. Nerona Imu, placed among the first 20 monarchs who created the World Government some 800 years ago and credited with the Devil’s Fruit — implying a roughly 800-year lifespan (Ch. 1086, Ch. 1179).
  • Imu wields decisive, world-scale power: obliterating Lulusia with an ancient weapon (Ch. 1060), personally killing King Cobra in the throne chamber (Ch. 1085), and destroying a Five Elder from across the world for letting “Joyboy” escape (Ch. 1125).
  • Imu’s stated fixation is Vivi and the Nefertari line — “I desire Vivi” (Ch. 1179, Ch. 1086).
  • Imu commands the world’s forces through covenants, controlling a signer’s body and thoughts at any range and piloting the Holy Knight Gunko by proxy (Ch. 1169, Ch. 1174).
  • In the latest, still-unconfirmed chapters Imu’s true form — a horned, white-haired, dark-skinned figure — descends in person to Elbaf and duels Gear-5 Luffy face to face, naming him “Joyboy” (Ch. 1179, Ch. 1187, Ch. 1188).

Still open: Whether the revealed body is Imu’s own or a possessed vessel, and Imu’s underlying race and nature — demon-entity, sky-being, or the source of all Devil Fruits — are left unstated.

Still open: What Imu ultimately wants with Vivi, and the endgame behind the centuries-long grudge against the D. line and Joy Boy.
