The titanic elephant whose back carries the entire land of Zou (VIZ caption “Zunesha,” Ch. 806 p. 5). Bathes itself twice a day by drawing up seawater — the “rain-ruption” flood the cities harvest for drinking water and for fish (pp. 2–5). Only the elephant’s legs and flank are seen this chapter.
Etymology
- Surface meaning: Zō (象) is Japanese for “elephant” — the same root as the island Zou the creature carries; “Zunesha”/“Zunisha” reads as an elaboration on zou.
- Design / reversed-name pun: in SBS Vol. 83 Oda named the species the “Naitamie-Norida Elephant” (ナイタミエノリダ象); read backwards it becomes Dali-no-e-mitai-na zou — “an elephant like a Dalí painting.” The model is Salvador Dalí’s 1948 surrealist canvas The Elephants, whose elephants stand on absurdly long, spindly stilt-legs (matching Zunisha’s silhouette).
- Mythological reference: the world-bearing elephant echoes the Hindu/Sanatani cosmology of the world resting on the backs of elephants (the “World Elephant”).

Arc-by-arc updates
Zou (Ch. 806) — first appearance (body only)
- Named “Zunesha”: the giant elephant the land of Zou rides on. It bathes itself twice daily; the resulting seawater flood (“rain-ruption”) is filtered at the city center and piped through aqueducts as the land’s water source, also carrying fish for food (pp. 2–5).
- Only the elephant’s legs/flank are shown — Kin’emon & Kanjuro scale its left leg on Kanjuro’s drawn cat “Nekozaemon” (pp. 3–4).
Zou (Ch. 819) — targeted for death by Jack
- Targeted for death by Jack, who decides to kill the elephant rather than re-invade the weakened minks (“No need to invade them… We’ll kill the elephant!!!”) (pp. 16–17). The minks note Zou itself is now the target. See Destruction of Zou, Jack Decides To Kill The Elephant Zunisha.
Zou — the island shakes; trumpeting (Ch. 820)
- At the chapter’s end, trumpets and the whole island rocks for the first time the minks have ever seen (“Zunesha’s trumpetin’!! / The island is rocking!!”), the moment Luffy hears a voice (p. 17). See Voice of All Things, A Voice Grows Louder Near The Zou Whale.
Zou (Ch. 821) — revealed sentient; sinks Jack’s fleet
- Revealed sentient and speaking. Zunisha is the source of “the voice” the cast has been hearing; it has a will of its own and can communicate (p. 10).
- Under an ancient sentence. “Long ago, the elephant committed a crime, and ever since… it has only been allowed to walk.” It acts solely on orders and cannot fight without permission — “I just need permission this once!!!” (pp. 10–11). See Zunisha’s Ancient Crime.
- Heard by Roger, Oden, Momonosuke, Luffy. Gol D. Roger and Lord Oden heard its voice on past visits but couldn’t converse with it; Momonosuke now receives its thoughts directly and Luffy hears it too (pp. 4, 8). See Voice of All Things.
- Sinks Jack’s fleet. On Momonosuke’s order (“Drive Jack away!! Don’t give up!!”), answers “UNDERSTOOD.” and destroys Jack’s five ships with a single trunk-swing (pp. 12–16).
Oden-era flashback (sensed) (Ch. 967)
- The Roger Pirates and Oden sense an immense presence at Zou — “It feels like something huge is WATCHING us” (pp. 14–15) — i.e., the living elephant carrying the island. See Voice of All Things.
Wano (sensed near Onigashima) (Ch. 1040) — a companion of Joy Boy; the crime is dated
- Telepathically reaches Momonosuke (adult dragon) from “very close by”; cannot leave its current task but is “glad you’re still well.”
- Revealed to be a companion of Joy Boy who committed a crime 800 years ago — the on-page reason it has only been “allowed to walk” (p. 15). Places the elephant’s ancient sentence in the Void Century. See Zunisha’s Ancient Crime, Joy Boy Identity, Void Century and Ancient Kingdom.
Wano Country (Ch. 1041) — arrives off Wano to fight at Momo’s side
- Zunisha reaches the seas off Wano Country, rises, and tells the dragon-form Momonosuke it has “come to join the fight at your side” (p. 2). Momo notes he “spoke with Zunisha once before, but only for a moment,” and does not yet know “the truth of the matter.” First time Zunisha is shown actively allying with the Kozuki heir in the present day.

Wano Country / Onigashima (Ch. 1043) — “Joy Boy has returned”; the drums of liberation
- Speaks for the first time since Zou: hears Luffy’s restarting heartbeat as “the drums of liberation” and declares “Joy-Boy… has returned!!!” for the first time in 800 years (p.16–17). Glowing-eye central panel — the chapter’s major reveal beat. Confirms Zunisha personally remembers Joy Boy and reads his return in the rhythm. Wano Country era — hears Joy Boy’s rhythm (Ch. 1046) — present-day; on Zou
- On Zou, bathing (the source of the flood Raizo carries to Onigashima). Hears the “Doom Dut Da Da” beat across the sea and weeps in recognition: “Oh, Joyboy. Joyboy. Wano Country — Momonosuke’s decision (Ch. 1050)
