Profile
Queen Lily of the Nefertari dynasty — one of the 20 founding kings of the World Government (~800 years ago), the only one who refused to become a Celestial Dragon. Distinct from Lily (the Bellamy-Pirates crew member, Ch. 223). A Void-Century-era figure; long deceased, never shown on-page.
Etymology
- Nefertari (surname, shared by the whole Alabasta royal house — cf. Nefertari Cobra, Vivi) references the historical Queen Nefertari, Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II (Egypt’s 19th Dynasty, 13th c. BC). The ancient-Egyptian name is glossed “the most beautiful (one)” / “beautiful companion” — a standard honorific for Egyptian queens, and the keystone of Alabasta’s ancient-Egypt motif.
- Lili / Lily (JP リリィ Ririi; VIZ “Lily”): conforms to the family’s female-naming convention — every Nefertari woman so far carries a doubled consonant-plus-i syllable: Vivi, Titi, Lili. The Western romanization lands on the flower lily (purity / royalty — the fleur-de-lis is a heraldic royal emblem, fitting a founding monarch, though Oda has given no SBS gloss confirming the flower reading).
- The hidden “D.” (ネフェルタリ・D・リリィ): the concealed middle initial marks the line as a Clan-of-D. house — the second family shown to hide the D. (after the Trafalgar line) and the first reigning-monarch house to bear it. The name itself thus encodes the chapter’s central reveal: the Nefertari kings have secretly carried the D. for 800 years.
- Spelling note (R/L): the family is romanized both Nefertari and Nefeltari (VIZ uses “Nefeltari” on Lily’s 800-year letter @1085), mirroring the kingdom’s own Arabasta / Alabasta split — both are artifacts of Japanese not distinguishing R and L (ラ-row kana).

Reverie flashback (Ch. 1084)
- Named on-page as one of the 20 founding kings of the World Government. Where the other 19 dynasties moved to Marijoa, abandoned their kingdoms’ names, and became Celestial Dragons, Lily alone chose to return to Alabasta and keep the Nefertari name reigning there — so the Empty Throne carries only 19 weapons, not 20 (pp. 7–9).
- Her name was erased from the World Government’s records; the Five Elders claim her younger brother took the Alabasta throne and that she never came back to rule (pp. 7–9).
- King Nefertari Cobra reveals the Nefertari kings have secretly passed down an 800-year-old letter from Lily, and asks the Elders point-blank “What is the D?” — tying the Nefertari line to the Will of D. (p. 9).

Reverie flashback — the 800-year letter surfaces (Ch. 1085)
- Imu attributes the worldwide scattering of the poneglyphs to Lily’s “great mistake of 800 years ago” — the liberation of the poneglyphs, and wonders aloud whether it was “a simple mistake, or… planned?” (pp. 3–4). - The dying Cobra names the 800-year-old letter’s sender — “Nefeltari… D. Lily” (p. 6) — on-page confirmation the Nefertari royal line secretly bears the concealed D. (VIZ misspelling “Nefeltari D. Lily”).
- Lily’s letter carries a directive Cobra dies relaying to Luffy and Vivi: “bear the flag of the dawn against the world… —Nefeltari D.
