Why this matters
Only Roger (22 years ago) and Luffy (Ch. 99) have laughed at their own execution. The chapter installs the laugh as a succession-claim grammar — laughing in the face of death is what King-of-the-Pirates-tier figures do.
Forward-pattern:
- Rayleigh on Sabaody — references the laugh when describing the Pirate-King-tier
- Oden during the boiling-pot at Wano — UNCONFIRMED, needs verification. Ch. 970, Ch. 971, and Ch. 972 (sentencing through the execution and death) contain no documented laugh in their page-by-page breakdowns; Oden’s death beat is instead recorded as a defiant roar (“I am Oden, and I was born to boil!!”), his dying testament/prophecy, and naming his children before being shot. Do not treat this as a captured instance of the pattern until a laugh is actually verified on-page.
- Every Joy-Boy-tier-figure-confronts-death scene re-keys to this Ch. 99 install
The grammar is structural: not bravery, not denial, but active joy in the face of execution. The laugh signals I see something beyond death that you do not. Roger saw Laugh Tale’s contents and laughed (now DRAWN on-page Ch. 967 p. 18); Luffy laughs from the chopping-block of someone else’s stage. The laugh predicts the Joy-Boy-reincarnation.
The chapter title ‘LUFFY DIED’ is the narrator-joke about this very grammar — the laugh-before-execution is structurally the moment when the King-of-the-Pirates identity is born, even (or especially) at the moment of apparent death.
