Chapter 820: Cats and Dogs Have a History

On Zou, the mink co-kings Dogstorm and Cat Viper unspool their shared history as retainers of the late Lord Kozuki Oden: with Oden they rode aboard both Whitebeard’s Moby Dick and Roger’s Oro Jackson (the latter built by Tom, Franky’s master), and so knew Shanks, Rayleigh, Buggy and the doctor Crocus. They explain Crocus’s navigation doctrine — follow the Log Pose to where all the routes converge and a realization about the poneglyphs, Raftel, and the lost civilization awaits — while Robin notes the minks gave her information about the Road Poneglyphs. Turning to the war against Kaido, the dukes name a hoped-for ally, Marco the Phoenix, and reveal that one year ago Marco’s Whitebeard remnants were obliterated by Blackbeard in “the Grudge War” — the battle after which Blackbeard joined the Four Emperors. The alliance agrees to split up: Kin’emon, Kanjuro and Momonosuke (with the freed Raizo) return to Wano to gather samurai; Cat Viper takes fighters to find Marco; Law takes his submarine to investigate Kaido’s poneglyph and asks Luffy for any poneglyph rubbings; and Luffy’s team departs to rescue Sanji. A vivre card from Kin’emon will let them regroup in Wano. After a reunion feast for Raizo, Zunisha suddenly trumpets and the whole island shakes — and Luffy alone asks, “Whose voice was that?”

• Dogstorm, Cat Viper and Lord Kozuki Oden sailed aboard both Whitebeard’s Moby Dick and Roger’s Oro Jackson; Roger scouted Oden from Whitebeard’s crew. Generationally, Oden was “more of a kid or an apprentice back then, like Shanks and Buggy.”
• Dog and Cat did not join Oden’s group on the trip to Raftel — but Oden reached Raftel with Roger.
• The Oro Jackson was built by Tom — Franky’s shipbuilding master (“an apprentice of Tom the shipwright?!”).
• The retainers had personal contact with Whitebeard, Roger and Rayleigh when those crews landed on Wano.
• Wano is an isolationist closed country where “it is a crime even to set sail”; Oden was a malcontent who long doubted the laws that kept the nation closed. (For a daimyo to ride with pirates would be a scandal — hence the retainers’ “duty” to keep him ashore.)
• Crocus was a crewmate of Roger — “one of those who knows all.” His navigation doctrine (recalled from Twin Cape): follow the log and all routes eventually converge; there is a point where all three needles point to one location, and reaching the log’s end brings the realization about the poneglyphs, the existence of Raftel, and “the civilization that gave birth to them” — from which Roger “started his adventure anew.”
• The minks gave Robin information about the Road Poneglyphs.
• One year ago, Marco and the remnants of the Whitebeard Pirates clashed with Teech and his crew in “the Grudge War”; each side brought in heavy help, and in the end Marco’s group was obliterated and he vanished. It was only after this battle that Blackbeard was included among the Four Emperors.
• Jinbei carried the unconscious Luffy away from the Paramount War on Whitebeard’s order (“Take Ace’s brother and go, Jimbei!!”) — i.e. the Whitebeard Pirates helped save Luffy’s life.
• The chapter ends with Zunisha trumpeting and Zou shaking — something never seen before — and Luffy alone hears a voice.
