⚑ Settled: Honebami is IMU’s blade, not Gaban’s — confirmed by VIZ Ch. 1190 p.8 (Imu’s own hand draws it from the Omen) and re-confirmed Ch. 1191. Gaban fought it with his twin axes and lost an arm escaping it. VIZ letters it “HONE-BAMI TOSHIRO!!!” (p.8, hyphenated for the line break) and “HONEBAMI!!” (p.14); the TCB long form “Honebami Toshiro” recorded @1190 is a scanlation variant of the same name.

Etymology: 八十梟帥 (やそたける Yasotakeru), lit. “Eighty Brave Chiefs / Eighty Tribal Leaders.” Takeru (梟帥) is an archaic word for the fierce leader of a valiant tribe; yaso (八十, “eighty”) is a symbolic figure for “countless / a great many.” The compound is the name the Kojiki / Nihon Shoki give to the Yasotakeru — the eighty brigand-chiefs slain by legendary first Emperor Jimmu on his eastern conquest — apt for a Roger-crew warrior who levels a giant castle-tower single-handed. • He is the common-law husband of the giantess Ripley (80) and father of the half-giant Collun (“giant shrimp,” 20, “took on a lot of giant’s blood”) — “marrying a giant’s not worth it!! • Etymology: “Scopper” puns the metal (s)copper — the third of the Roger Pirates’ top-three metal names: Gol D. = gold, Silvers Rayleigh = silver, Scopper Gaban = copper (≈ bronze; JP 銅 dō covers both). Gold/silver/bronze = the winner’s-medal podium. “Gaban” is named after the French actor-singer Jean Gabin (Oda, SBS Vol 112). Oda denied the fan-proposed Space Sheriff Gavan (tokusatsu) link — but that show was itself named after Jean Gabin, so the resemblance is no accident. Confidence: high.
