Why this family matters (plot weight)

The clan ties Wano to Zou — the mink kings are ancient sworn brothers / retainers of the Kozuki — and to the poneglyph network: a red poneglyph “of a different usage” has stood for centuries behind the Kozuki crest in Zou’s whale-tree (see Void Century and Ancient Kingdom, Poneglyph).

Zou (Ch. 818) — the clan are the poneglyph-makers; Oden’s voyage + execution

• The clan are the poneglyph-makers. Revealed Ch. 818 (pp. 12–13): the Kozuki are a centuries-old line of master stonemasons whose skill with rock is unparalleled, and they created the indestructible poneglyphs ~800 years (eight centuries) ago.
• The clan passed down only the way to read the ancient runes (not the contents) — a teaching cut short in Kozuki Oden’s generation, so Momonosuke never received it (pp. 13–14).
• Lord Kozuki Oden was executed by the Shogun of Wano and the pirate Kaido to save his servants; he had earlier sailed with Gol D. Roger to Raftel and learned “the secret of the world” (pp. 14–17) — the reason Kaido’s Animal Kingdom Pirates now torture the clan for what it knows. Zou (Ch. 819) — Oden’s Roger voyage restated; the heir’s vow; Momonosuke’s mother

• His wife (Momonosuke’s mother) was put to death in Wano (flashback, pp. 10–11) — an as-yet-unnamed Kozuki member .
• The clan’s direct vassals are the two mink kings Dogstorm and Cat Viper; Momonosuke tearfully vows to grow strong, avenge his parents, and defeat Kaido — the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance forms to that end (pp. 11–14).

• Momonosuke (the Kozuki heir) can hear and command Zunisha; on his order the world-elephant drives off Jack (pp. 9–16).
