Chapter 141: Quack Doctor

Summary

Cover-art opens the chapter (p. 1): Django’s Dance Paradise, Vol. 12 — “Django discovered in disguise at the dance contest” — Django dancing at the Mirror-Ball Dance Contest’s Funky Stage, surrounded by costumed contestants.

At Big Horn (pp. 2-3), a sweeping cold-open shows Zoro standing over a snowfield of dozens of fallen Wapol foot-soldiers (DOOM!!), sheathing his three blades (TUP) — “It’s over? … What a bunch of wimps!!” The villagers cry “Amazing,” “All right!! Good job, Zolo!! Just what I ordered,” and run to help the wounded — “Hurry up!! Dig as fast as you can!! Melt the snow!! … F-Find Dalton!! … Dalton!! Please don’t die!!” — confirming that Dalton has been gunned down (off-page, between chapters) in Wapol’s invasion of Big Horn.

Cut to Drum Castle (pp. 3-9). A large, antlered reindeer with a small white X-marked top hat thunders out of the castle gates (DOOM!!) — “Look at him go!! … Wow!! Now he looks like a normal reindeer!! Awesome!!!” — this is Chopper in a new transformed form (Heavy-Point), racing through the snow with the line: “This is bad. I must inform the doctor!!” — his first on-page dialogue in the series.

Chopper crashes into Kureha’s room (WHAM!! SKREECH!!) — “Doctor!! Terrible news!! … Wapol’s back!!!” Kureha, sunglasses lowered, replies “I see.”

Outside Drum Castle (pp. 5-7), Wapol and his party reach the castle and find a pirate flag flying from the spire instead of Drum Kingdom’s flag (FWAP… FWAP…) — “A pirate flag!!? What happened to the flag of Drum Kingdom!!?” Wapol turns and finds Dr. Kureha standing in the snow above the parapet — “So, Dr. Kureha, it’s you!! The last survivor of the great Doctor Hunt!!! You just won’t die, will you!!?” Kureha laughs (KAK KAK KAK KAK KAK!!) — “That old rag? I burned it.” Wapol — “Now leave this island!! Drum Kingdom is no more!!! I’ve turned your castle into a mausoleum for Hiriluk! You rotten brats aren’t welcome here anymore!”

An officer reports (p. 7): “Dalton’s heart has stopped beating!!!” — Dalton is reported dead. Wapol howls (p. 7): “HA HA HA!! Don’t make me laugh!! Mausoleum!!? For that charlatan!!?” Wapol turns to begin his retake-the-throne speech — “And now…” — and is interrupted (p. 8) by Luffy’s Gum-Gum punch rocketing in (BWOING / WOOSH…!!!). Luffy lands among them — “I’ve got a score to settle with you guys!!!” Wapol’s officer: “Lord Wapol, it’s Straw Hat!!” Wapol (p. 9): “That swine… how dare he!? What does he think I am!?”

Six years earlier — Doctor Hunt flashback (pp. 9-17): ”…Six years earlier. This is the tale of Drum Kingdom.” A house burns in a snow-village (p. 9). A small reindeer figure flees in the snow as a dog barks (WOOF WOOF); villagers shout — “It had to be him!! Hiriluk did this!!” / “First he stole the money, then he started this fire!!”

A tall caped figure with a top hat and a doctor’s bag swaggers through the snow (p. 10), counting bills from a burning-house mob: “40,000… 45,000… 50,000 berries.” The frightened mob: “Hmph. Is that all!!?” Hiriluk (coughing — KOFF KOFF KOFF): “Quit making such a fuss over a burning house!!” The caption-box formally introduces him: DR. HIRILUK — QUACK DOCTOR.

Hiriluk visits a different sick family (p. 11) — the father pleads, “That’s it!! I’m calling the Twenty Doctors. Better to beg Wapol’s forgiveness than to let you die!!” Hiriluk crashes through the chimney (KRASH!!) — “There’s no need for that!!! … I’ll examine you. Never fear, I’ll do anything for a patient!!” — “Dr. Hiriluk!!? You came down the chimney!!?” Hiriluk: “You’re in luck, my good man. I just perfected my cure-all yesterday. It’s no trouble at all.” The terrified father (p. 11-12): “W-Wait. Thanks anyway, but please don’t… The Twenty Doctors will treat me!!!”

Hiriluk fires a hypo-shot anyway (p. 12 — BLAM!!! AAAH!!!). The mother and child scream and run (WAAH!! Mommy!! Daddy!!). Hiriluk in monologue (p. 12, bottom): “Don’t insult me. I never take money from patients!! I just want to save you!! … Blast… have I failed!? What have I done!? Could the formula be wrong!? I was sure that frog extract would work!! Should I have administered it intravenously!?” The shot (the explosion behind him) turns out to be the security force opening fire on him (KREESH!). “Blast! It’s the security force!”

Hiriluk flees through the snow (p. 13). He crosses a snow-bridge and finds Dr. Kureha waiting on the far side — “Happy, child?” Caption-box: DR. KUREHA (133 YEARS OLD). Kureha (p. 13): “Had you not called yourself a doctor… hundreds of people wouldn’t have suffered from a simple cold. There’s nothing worse than an incompetent physician.” Hiriluk: “Hmph! Shut up! I don’t need a lecture from a greed-driven witch!” / “You’re only in it for the money!” Kureha: “Except for the Twenty Doctors, you and I are the only doctors left on this island.” / “That’s my style. You know…”

On the bridge (p. 14): Hiriluk — “The Doctor Hunt will never catch me, mark my words.” Kureha — “But even so… everyone on this island despises you.” Hiriluk — “Someday my medicine will save this kingdom!!” Kureha — “Save? Don’t you mean destroy?” Hiriluk parts: “I hope I never see you again, you old hag!!” Kureha parts (off-panel): “We’ll meet again, young quack.”

Then (p. 14 bottom): “AAH!! IT’S A BOMB!!! RUN!!” — and a KA-BOOM on the bridge.

Hiriluk is wounded, bleeding into the snow (p. 15 — DOOM!! SHWOOO…). A small reindeer with antlers — Chopper, his blue nose and blue sky-pelt visible — steps closer through the trees. Hiriluk (p. 15, slumped against a tree): “Who… are you?” He starts patching the reindeer up (BING! GARR! / DOIN!!) — “I’ll save you!! Don’t glare at me. And don’t worry. You’ve been shot! If we don’t stop the bleeding, you’ll die!! … I see, you’re that snowman I’ve heard rumors about. …I perfected a medicine that can heal anything, even broken bones. You’re very fortunate, my good monster. Just three days ago…”

A villager mob descends, blasting at the reindeer (p. 16 — BLAM!! BLAM!! BLAM!!) — “Don’t let him get away!! Corner him!!! … Kill him before he kills one of us!!! … It’s the abominable snowman!! Shoot him!!” Off-panel — “By the way, just what are you? You don’t look human.” The mob piles on the reindeer (WHAM!! GRAARR!!).

Page 17: A villager finishes a shot (KRUNCH KRUNCH SHWOOO…) — “HOORAH!!! Finish him!! Make sure he’s dead!!! … Hey! He’s hit!!! … Kill him!!” But Hiriluk has dragged himself between the mob and the bleeding reindeer (WOOOH! Hey!! Wait!) — “What does he think I am!?” — “That swine… how dare he!? Sway…!!” (the Hiriluk monologue / Wapol-present-day rhyme overlapping in the gutter). The chapter ends on Hiriluk shielding Chopper.

Page 18 — back-matter: SBS Question Corner, MC’d by Nami, with three Q&A panels — (1) Super Spotbill = Karoo, a huge, land-type, teeth-showing spot-billed duck; (2) Black Snail-o-phone with closed lid looks like poo (see vol. 15 p. 31); (3) Oda calls a reader “some kind of idiot!!?” for asking “what question should I ask?” — “See you in the next volume!!!”

• Chapter title — Chapter 141: Quack Doctor — the on-page name for the Hiriluk register; the caption-box at p. 10 formally introduces DR. HIRILUK — QUACK DOCTOR (p. 1, 10).
• Dr. Hiriluk debuts on-page — the late mountain-doctor referenced obliquely by Wapol now appears in a six-years-earlier flashback (pp. 9-17). Visual: gaunt, mustachioed, black top hat with a faded white skull-and-crossbones, long black-and-red cape, doctor’s-bag with a jolly-roger emblem.
• The great Doctor Hunt — Wapol purged all but the Twenty Doctors (pp. 6, 11, 13). The historical purge by which Wapol concentrated all medical legitimacy in a state-licensed cadre of twenty, driving every other doctor off the island or underground.

Open questions raised

• Who exactly are the Twenty Doctors? Named only as a state-licensed cadre of physicians under Wapol’s protection. Not individually shown. Are they competent? Captive? Complicit? Forward-canon: not yet developed in this chapter.
• What is the Security Force? A Wapol-enforcer arm that hunts non-Twenty doctors (p. 12 — “It’s the security force!” opening fire on Hiriluk). Not yet shown in uniform or named for a leader.
• Did Hiriluk die from the bridge-bomb on p. 14, or later? Wapol’s present-day line “mausoleum for Hiriluk” (p. 7) implies he is dead by the present-day frame, but the flashback ends with him alive-and-shielding-Chopper (p. 17). Forward-canon: Hiriluk’s full death is not yet on-page.
• Is Dalton actually dead? “Dalton’s heart has stopped beating!!!” (p. 7) lands as reported-dead, but the report comes via a Wapol officer in the heat of battle. Not yet confirmed by the narrative voice.
• What is Chopper’s transformation called and how does it work? Chopper goes from small-bipedal (Ch. 134) to large-quadruped (Ch. 141 pp. 3-4). Devil Fruit not yet named on-page. The transformation is shown but not explained.

Specialist follow-ups

• etymology — Hiriluk (likely a transliterated reading; possible Slavic / Eastern European register; possibly a play on a Russian/Slavic name-form, or a “hiriku” coinage). Worth a name-origin pass alongside Kureha (= 紅葉 / autumn-leaves register) and Chopper — the Drum-Island doctor-trio’s names form a coherent set. 10, 13-15) → pink top hat with white X-cross (Chopper, Ch. 134 + 141 p. 4). The hat is the visual inheritance object — and the skull-and-crossbones-as-medical-cross is a deliberate jolly-roger / medical-cross double-meaning that should be cross-referenced against every later Chopper-hat appearance (and against the Roger jolly-roger when Chopper’s hat is in frame). (2) Hiriluk shielding Chopper with his body (p. 17) is a body-shield pose that recurs in later flashbacks (Ace shielding Luffy at Marineford, etc.) — flag for the mirror-pose catalog. (3) The pirate-flag flying from Drum Castle (p. 6) — a black flag with a white skull-and-crossbones over a national castle — should be mirrored against later national-castle-pirate-flag moments (Whitebeard’s flag-raising motif, the Sun Pirates / Fish-Man Island flag-raise, etc.).
