I am going to hurt you the way you hurt yourself, so you understand someone is paying attention to you. Mechanically nonsensical (Luffy gains nothing combat-strategic; the Going Merry loses a mast), emotionally maximal (Laboon is engaged-as-equal for the first time in 50 years).

Why this matters

The proto-version of the Luffy-as-emotional-counter-mirror combat-grammar that recurs at every later arc:

• Enies Lobby (Ch. 398+) — Luffy cries for Robin and demands she say she wants to live → the counter-mirror to Robin’s let-me-die grammar.
• Whole Cake (Ch. 845+) — Luffy demands Sanji’s name under Big Mom’s siege → the counter-mirror to Sanji’s family-disownment grammar.
• Wano (Ch. 909+) — Luffy eats Tama’s smile-fruit kibi-dango → the counter-mirror to Tama’s no-one-shares-food-with-me-here grammar.

Generalization — captain-as-emotional-counter-mirror

The doctrine is not just a one-off; it is a captain-doctrine — Luffy’s leadership-grammar from this point forward includes recognizing the form of someone’s grief and meeting it with an equivalent gesture-in-kind. This is distinct from sympathy (acknowledging the grief), empathy (sharing the grief), or solidarity (standing with the grieving). The Luffy-doctrine is mimetic counter-action — I will perform the same wound on myself / on you so that the wound itself becomes a shared event.
