Chapter 104: Cape Promise

Summary

The chapter opens with the Straw Hats inside the stomach of a giant whale, standing on a built-out homestead with a tower-house, palm tree, weather-vane and a dock — all constructed inside the creature by an old man with a flower-decorated hat and beard. The old man is a former physician and ship’s doctor; he built the structure as a doctor’s whim to treat the whale from the inside. Doom! — the doors open, the Going Merry surfaces outside the whale through a hatch in its head. As they emerge they are interrupted by two costumed strangers — Mr. 9 (blue-haired, bare-chested, NUMBER 9 on his crown, beaver-tail belt) and Ms. Wednesday (blonde-crowned, blue-cape, dual saber, beauty-mark) — who get splashed into the gastric-acid sea by the Straw Hats’ arrival. They swim back to their own boat, shake their fists at the old man and the whale, name the old man as Crocus, and shout: “And Crocus! One day, we’ll get that whale! …The organization will be very interested in them! Don’t forget our business is pirates!” — Baroque Works’ first on-page reference, in pair-coded codename format. The boat sails off.

Cut to the Twin Cape exterior: the old man (now revealed-named-Crocus by Mr. 9’s parting shout) has built a homestead on the cape next to a brick lighthouse-tower overlooking Reverse Mountain. The whale is Laboon. Crocus narrates: 50 years ago, Laboon arrived at the Grand-Line entrance with a pirate crew from the West Blue, on the other side of the Red Line. They promised to return for him in a couple of years, then sailed up Reverse Mountain into the Grand Line. They never came back. Sanji (smoking, sitting): “They’re dead. He’ll be waiting for them till the end of time.” Crocus: “I’m afraid reality is even crueler than fiction.” Usopp (objecting): “You don’t know that! They could still return!!” Crocus: “I have it from a reliable source. The Grand Line.” Nami: “But to flee the Grand Line, they’d have to cross the Calm Belt!” — first on-page utterance of the Calm Belt. Crocus: “…even if they are alive, they can never return here. The season, the climate, the ocean currents, even the air currents — everything about this place is unpredictable. Precisely. That’s why… their fate is uncertain. Weak hearts soon succumb to fear on the Grand Line. On these seas, nothing is ever normal.”

Laboon, off-shore, bellows continuously (BWAAAH!). Crocus: “And that’s when it began.” — Laboon turns toward the Red Line and begins to ram the rock-wall with his forehead. Nami close-up: “Then he started ramming the Red Line with his head.” Sanji (chain-smoking): “I’ve tried explaining it to him many times. But he refuses to face the truth.” Luffy: “He’s afraid to lose his reason for waiting.” Crocus: “It’s as if he were convinced that any day now, the pirates would return from behind the mountain. He still believes in those jerks! …After all this time he’s terrified of losing that hope.” Sanji + Nami close: “Look at those scars on his forehead. Why do you still take care of him? But they lied to you, too. Well, you can’t help but feel sorry for him.” — the empathy-grammar primes the scene.

Luffy abruptly turns and runs (RAAH! / TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP…). Sanji: “Huh!?” Nami: “You take your eyes off him for one second and… What’s that idiot doing? Maybe he likes mountain climbing.” Luffy reaches the Going Merry, climbs the main mast, stretches (GUM-GUM… FWOING!!!), and snaps the mast off (BLIP BLIP…). He hauls the mast back to the cape and clobbers Laboon between the eyes (SHUNK!! / …BOUQUET!!! — of our ship!? — Yeah, that’s the main mast — Hey, isn’t that the mast…). Laboon’s eyes go saucer-wide (WOOOO! / WAAAAA!). Straw Hats panic (WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING!? / Don’t destroy our ship! / Waah!!). Laboon, enraged, charges Luffy off the cape (DOOM!! / He’s gonna ram us!). Luffy plants himself and head-butts the charging whale (TCHING…/ KRUNCH / KRAA / GRAAH / BWAH / RRMBB-BWAAAHH!!). The collision freezes — IT’S A DRAW!! — Luffy holds Laboon’s forehead in place with his own head. Laboon backs off, blinks, stunned. Luffy turns, grins down at the Straw Hats: “DOOM!!! / …? / I’m pretty strong, huh!?” — closing on Luffy’s full-grin reaction-panel.

The chapter title Cape Promise lands as a forward-promise: Luffy has just convinced Laboon, by matching the whale’s pain blow-for-blow, that he has a new opponent worth waiting for at this cape. The promise itself is not yet spoken — Ch. 104 closes on the I’m pretty strong, huh!? grin; the rematch-promise lands in Ch. 105.

Open questions raised

• Who were the pirates Laboon waited for? — pre-loads Rumbar Pirates / Brook (Thriller Bark, ~Ch. 488). The chapter does not name the crew.
• Who is Crocus before he was a whale-doctor? — “I even spent a few years as a ship’s doctor.” The chapter does not reveal whose ship’s doctor he was. The Roger-Pirates connection is pending (~Ch. 105).
• What is the organization Mr. 9 + Ms. Wednesday work for? — Baroque Works is not named yet; pre-loads the Whisky-Peak arc.
• Why is Ms. Wednesday — Princess Nefertari Vivi of Alabasta — undercover as a Baroque agent? — the reader doesn’t even know she is Vivi yet. Forward-payoff at Ch. 113-114 reveals.
• What is the Calm Belt mechanically? — Nami names it but does not explain the no-wind / Sea-King infestation mechanics. Pending.
• Will Luffy return to the cape to keep his promise to Laboon? — title-card-thematic open question; Ch. 105 will explicitly seal the promise. Cross-reference Thriller Bark for the eventual Brook → keep-the-promise-for-Luffy-by-returning-as-Laboon’s-crewmember payoff-twist.
