Summary

Vegapunk’s pre-recorded message continues to air across the world as the Straw Hats fight to escape Egghead. The recording lays out the deep history he reconstructed “from a handful of poneglyphs”: the Void Century was “a breathtakingly vast war,” and Joy Boy was a pirate whose enemy was “the World Government of the present day” — more precisely its precursor, “a provisional army put together by 20 kingdoms known as the Alliance.” Two competing ideologies came head-to-head; without judging right or wrong, Vegapunk states Joy Boy’s faction was so robust the Alliance had no other choice but war. The lost civilization was “startlingly advanced” — its weapons impossible to re-create even for him — and the conflict “came to a close with the defeat of Joy Boy,” leaving “vast, permanent scars of war across the face of the world.” Then the central thesis: the sea rose 200 meters during that century, a shift so dramatic it “could not have happened within a single century” and must be a man-made disaster; the world today is “living on the pieces of a continent,” with “a number of continents we know nothing about” now slumbering “unseen at the bottom of the sea.” Finally — “the ancient weapons that sank the world into the sea 800 years ago… still exist today, and await the moment that they stir once again” — the war “never came to an end.” The broadcast is intercut with a worldwide reaction montage: the Flower Capital of Wano (Kin’emon and the retainers — “So Joyboy was a pirate? The chapter closes on Mariejois / Pangaea Castle and a pair of wide, shadow-cast eyes.

• Joy Boy’s enemy was the World Government’s precursor. Vegapunk: “Joyboy’s enemy… was the World Government of the present day!! …more accurately, it was the precursor to the World Government… a provisional army put together by 20 kingdoms known as the Alliance!!” (pp. 3–4).
• The war ended with Joy Boy’s defeat — and he had a faction. “Two competing ideologies came head-to-head… so robust was Joyboy’s faction!!” (p. 4); “[the Void Century]… came to a close with the defeat of Joy Boy” (p. 9).
• A “startlingly advanced” lost civilization. Its weapons “appear to be impossible to re-create with the latest of modern science” — “even I, a humble genius, cannot replicate them!!” (p. 5).
