Chapter 809: The Cat Viper

Summary

On Zou, Robin recaps the weapons-trade chain (Caesar built the gas weapon, Doflamingo sold it, “it made its way up to Kaido”) while a Yougara drools over the captive Caesar (p. 3). Wanda explains the Mokomo Dukedom is ruled by two kings at once: the official sovereign Duke Dogstorm (Inuarashi), who rules the daylight hours, and the Cat Viper (Nekomamushi), Whale Forest guardian and “King of the Night,” who rules from dusk to dawn — once fast friends, now bitter rivals who split the day so they never meet (pp. 4-6). The bulk of the chapter is a flashback to Jack’s assault on Zou: Jack of the Beasts Pirates came hunting a hidden Wano samurai, his crew stunned that the minks fight back (Musketeers by day, Guardians by night). Duke Dogstorm drops his sword and refuses to resist — pleading only that Jack stop destroying the homeland and search freely, since the samurai “is not in this land” — yet withstands Jack’s monstrous blow (pp. 7-14). Jack’s bounty is revealed at one billion Berries (p. 13). At the 6 p.m. shift change the Cat Viper roars awake and takes the field with the Guardians, declaring “When the moon’s out, this land is mine!!” He is formally introduced as the Whale Forest Guardian, King of the Night (pp. 15-17), and vows he would chew any intruder to pieces and never let a samurai be taken from the island (pp. 18-19).
