Structural lore — the on-page-named phenomenon the drums of liberation (解放のドラム), first heard returning the instant Luffy’s heart restarts Ch. 1043. The open questions live at Joy Boy Identity and Sun God Identity and the Divine Pattern; the name-encoding seed-tracker is Joy Boy - name foreshadows Drums of Liberation Caribbean folklore figure.
What we know
- Ch. 1043 (pp. 16–17): A rhythmic “drum” phenomenon that the millennium-old elephant Zunisha hears returning “for the first time in 800 years” the instant Luffy’s stopped heart restarts. Zunisha names it “the drums of liberation” and reads it as the signal that Joy Boy has returned.
- Ch. 1043 (p.17): On-page, the “drums” are rendered as Luffy’s reviving heartbeat (
DOOM DUT DA DA), beneath Luffy’s grinning silhouette. - Ch. 1043 (p.16): The adult-dragon Momonosuke also perceives the rhythm — “I can hear it!!” — so the faculty to hear the drums is not unique to Zunisha.
Chronology / structure
- Void Century (~800 years ago): Zunisha last heard the drums of liberation — fixing the phenomenon to the era of Joy Boy, whom the elephant personally knew (see Zunisha’s Ancient Crime).
- Present day (Ch. 1043): the drums return as Luffy revives on the Skull Dome roof.
Open questions about this topic
- Joy Boy Identity — what does “Joy Boy has returned” mean (reincarnation, inherited will, or the shared awakened power)?
- Zunisha’s Ancient Crime — how does Zunisha know Joy Boy by his drums, and what bound it to him?
The deeper Nika / Sun-God cosmology (the fruit’s true name, Gear 5, the “Warrior of Liberation” epithet) is NOT shown in this chapter — it pays off the next chapter. Do not back-fill that lore here.
