Chapter 1175: Niddhoggr

Summary

At Elbaf’s Western Village the Straw Hats finish freeing the children who had been bound in the Holy Knight Sommers’s steel-hard thorns — Sanji’s heat proves the thorns’ weakness and Robin gets them loose (p.2). But Sommers, an undying thorn-man, survives and re-attacks, vowing to still deliver the children to the Holy Land or, failing that, to slaughter the “half-dead parents” with his thorn launchers (pp.5–7). As he takes aim at the children shielding their parents, a bespectacled giant marksman fires “Dawn Thor Rifle” — the plan teased at the close of the prior chapter — shredding the thorns, while giant-sized Luffy (Gear 5, all in white) covers for Zoro (pp.7–8). Then a giant obsidian dragon seizes Sommers and consumes him; in his last moment the immortal knight sees “Luffy all in white” and gasps “Nika?!” (pp.9–10). The giants realize the white warrior “looks just like Nika,” the Warrior of Liberation. An elder explains the crisis: the Treasure of Elbaf is a forbidden Devil Fruit — the Dragon-Dragon Fruit, Mythical Type, Model: Niddhoggr — that turns its eater into the world’s largest dragon (its size scaling with the eater), and the reason the dragon now stands on Elbaf’s side is Prince Loki, who is the dragon (pp.11–12). The elder relays Elbaf’s legend of a Warrior God who wielded the hammer Ragnir (“Iron Lightning”), became an enormous dragon to fight the Sun God, and rode with a loyal ice squirrel, Ratatoskr — who, without his master, chose to inhabit Ragnir and wait for the owner’s return (p.13). Ragnir “has finally chosen”: Loki, now wielding it, rides/embodies Niddhoggr with Ratatoskr at his side, breathing lightning at Killingham’s dream-monsters and smashing with a hammer-blow (“Thorheim!!!”) (pp.14–17). In the final panel an unseen figure with archaic speech, before a grand castle, spots the dragon — “I see… Niddhoggr… So… That’s where thou were!!!”

• The Treasure of Elbaf is a forbidden Devil Fruit (p.11): “A Devil Fruit. A forbidden one.” — the Dragon-Dragon Fruit, Mythical Type, Model: Niddhoggr (p.12).
• Eating it transforms the user into the largest dragon in the world, and “the maximum size of the beast corresponds to the one who eats it” — so a giant, or an ancient giant, eating it “instead of a human” extracts the fruit’s potential in greater measure (p.12).
• The obsidian dragon breathes lightning and “is so vast that day falls into night when it flies” (p.12).
• Because of the danger, Elbaf has ensured no one could eat it: the Guardian Hammer, Ragnir (“Iron Lightning”) blocks anyone who tries to eat the fruit (pp.12–13). Ragnir is a weapon, not a giant person (correcting the @1141 “seizes Ragnir” mention).
• Prince Loki is the dragon — the legendary Elbaf-royal fruit is his power. Loki, in dragon-form, growls that anyone who climbs “on my back” gets dumped off (p.3); the elder says the dragon “must be Loki” (p.11), and “Ragnir… has finally chosen” him (pp.13–14).

Open questions raised

• Did Loki eat the Niddhoggr fruit (becoming the dragon), or does he command a guardian dragon while Ragnir “chose” him? The pages frame Loki as the dragon (people climb “on my back”) — likely he is the Zoan user — but the exact mechanic is left implicit.
• Who is the archaic-speaking figure (p.17) that has located Niddhoggr — a Holy Knight, the winged “Great One,” or another antagonist — and whose castle is shown?
• Is the immortal Sommers truly dead after being consumed by Niddhoggr, or will he regenerate?
• How does the Elbaf Warrior God vs Sun God legend map onto the present Loki–Luffy alliance and the Nika/Joy-Boy endgame?
