Wano's Sealed Borders And The Awaited Figure
Structural lore — the first on-page reason Wano is a closed country: a deliberate Kozuki act ~800 years ago against a great external power, guarding the door for an awaited figure.
What we know
Ch. 1055 pp. 6–9 — the seal recontextualized: the walls hide Pluton; opening Wano releases it
Kozuki Sukiyaki shows that ~800 years ago Wano was a different, lower country with an enormous Fuji mountain; its towns flooded, the basin filled with rainwater, great walls grew around the island , and new land was built on the mountainside — the Wano of today (pp. 6–7). The walls are “the country’s natural defense”; beneath the Road Poneglyph rests the Ancient Weapon Pluton , so “opening the borders” means tearing down the walls and unleashing the weapon (pp. 8–9). Kaido ’s very presence “was a deterrent that kept enemies away from this land” (p. 10). Recontextualizes Oden’s dying creed and the @0972 “great external power.”
The “awaited figure” arrives: Momonosuke is proclaimed Shogun of Wano — “The true shogunate… has returned at last!!!” He vows to “lead the land of Wano” and make it “a paradise on earth,” with Orochi and Kaido gone. The still-open question is whether he will OPEN Wano’s centuries-sealed borders (Oden ’s unfinished creed).
Ch. 1050 pp. 10-11 — the new Kozuki heir consciously keeps Wano sealed “yet”
As the living Kozuki heir (adult dragon), Momonosuke tells Zunisha he has “thought long and hard” and decides “I will not open the borders… yet .” Zunisha defers: “I trust in your judgment… I will respect your decision.” The awaited-figure / open-Wano creed now sits explicitly in Momonosuke’s hands, and he chooses to defer it — the pointed “yet” frames the opening as a future beat, not a refusal.
Ch. 1020 pp. 2–4 — Kaido reframes the sealed borders as cover for an arms-export operation
Kaido ’s reason to keep Wano sealed-yet-open-for-business: he names Wano “a weapons factory ” Orochi exploited and wants to open its borders to “release them [weapons] unto the world.” Frames the sealed-border policy as cover for an arms-export operation. See Wano Is A Hidden Weapons Factory , New Onigashima Project .
Ch. 987 p. 3 — the Scabbards open the raid with Oden’s creed
The Scabbards open the raid with the cry “Open Wano’s borders!!!” — restating Oden’s dying creed as the explicit goal of the assault on Kaido. (Page 3)
Ch. 972 pp. 7–8 — Oden states the reason for Wano’s seal
At his execution, Oden reveals the Kozuki clan were “the ones responsible for closing this nation to the rest of the world” ~800 years ago — and did so to protect Wano from a great external power (p. 7). He adds that “when that figure appears, after an 800-year span… this country must be prepared to welcome and work with them” — “Wano… no, the entire world awaits a figure” (p. 8). His dying command is to open Wano’s borders in his stead so the country is ready.
Ch. 984 p. 17 — Yamato vows to open Wano (a non-Kozuki would-be border-opener)
Yamato — Kaido ’s own child, who idolizes Oden and keeps his voyage journal — declares the goal of opening Wano “to the world” (p. 17), inheriting Oden’s awaited-figure creed and positioning a bearer outside the Kozuki bloodline to carry it.
Ch. 985 pp. 9–10, 15–19 — the seal-Wano-deeper counterpoint
The awaited-figure creed is set against Kaido ’s New Onigashima Project : rather than open Wano, Kaido plans to seal it deeper as the weapons-fortress “New Onigashima,” exploiting Wano’s waterfall defenses as a barrier “neither the Navy nor the World Government can easily reach” (pp. 15–19). Yamato — who carries Oden ’s will and means to open the country — is named the project’s figurehead shogun, then rejects it (“Stupid Dad!!!”, p. 19). The two visions of Wano’s borders collide.
Ch. 972 : The Kozuki clan sealed Wano ~800 years ago — the first on-page reason for Wano’s closed-country status.
Ch. 972 : The seal’s purpose was to protect Wano from “a great external power.”
Ch. 972 : The seal was intended to last an 800-year span , after which a figure “the entire world awaits” would appear; Wano’s borders were meant to open to welcome and work with them.
Ch. 972 : Oden ’s dying wish — “open up Wano in my stead!!” — is the attempt to ready the country for that figure.
Ch. 996 : Shinobu names Momonosuke as “the one who must guide the world to the dawn” (p. 10) — the awaited-figure / dawn motif transferred to the living Kozuki heir during the raid.
