Summary

The first chapter of the Alabasta saga. The Going Merry sails into the storm beyond Loguetown, looking for the lighthouse-marker that pointed them toward the Grand Line entrance — but the guiding light has gone out. Nami pulls the crew into the galley and reveals (from the stolen-from-Buggy Grand Line map) that the entrance to the Grand Line is up a mountain — Reverse Mountain on the Red Line. Usopp panics at the impossibility; Sanji defends Nami’s reading; Luffy delights and coins it mystery mountain. Mid-debate, the storm vanishes — they’ve drifted into the Calm Belt, the windless dead-zone flanking the Grand Line on both sides. The deck tremors: massive Sea Kings (in-world canon name Neptunians) breach the surface around the Merry — it’s a nest. The crew row frantically back into the storm. Nami delivers the full geography lesson: powerful currents from all four seas converge at Reverse Mountain, the Red-Line barrier forces the upper waters back through the mountain’s interior canals to a central confluence, and the canals channel the current down into the Grand Line. Reverse Mountain is canonized as a winter island with a canal-or-die binary entry — miss the canal, the ship is destroyed. The mountain itself comes into view, summit lost in storm-cloud canopy. The canal-current sucks the Merry up the mountain’s exterior, defying gravity. At the canal-entry the ship is off-axis and about to crash — Luffy springs forward and plants his rubber-stretched foot as a giant bumper between the prow and the canal-wall (BWOING!!!), bouncing the ship back into the canal. The crew is in.

  • Why was the lighthouse out? Nami treats guiding-light-gone-out as a crisis; Usopp treats it as routine. Pre-loads the lighthouse-keeper-as-human-agent reveal in Ch. 102 (Crocus).
  • Are the Calm-Belt Neptunians intelligent? The nest framing implies aggregated colony, but the chapter doesn’t show goal-directed behavior. Pre-loads the long-burn Sea-King-cognition reveals (Fishman Island, Poseidon-controls-them).
  • How does Reverse Mountain’s interior canal-channel work? Nami’s diagram shows currents converging at the top and flowing out into the Grand Line, but the internal structure of the mountain (single canal? multiple branching canals? confluence-chamber at the summit?) is not yet shown.
  • What happens at the bottom of the canal? The chapter ends with the Going Merry in the canal heading toward the summit — the down-the-other-side into the Grand Line leg is still pending (Ch. 102).
