Chapter 1149: One Second

Summary

At Elbaf’s Western Village, the mysterious old schoolmaster “Mr. Ya” — revealed to be Scopper Gaban of the Roger Pirates, “the left arm of the King of the Pirates, the counterpart to Rayleigh” — cuts down the immortal Holy Knight St. Sommers “in one second,” his blade somehow negating the undying regeneration the crew couldn’t overcome (pp. 3–8). The Straw Hats present — Robin (pinned by Sommers’s iron thorns), Brook, Nami, Chopper — reel at his identity. Meanwhile the Holy Knight Killingham burns the Owl Library — the archive holding Ohara’s rescued texts — himself, loosing a flaming arrow (“I’ll take care of the other building,” p. 9) after first psychologically coercing the giant schoolgirl Ronja into torching a separate building to prove her obedience (“You have proven yourself obedient,” p. 9); Chief Jarul weeps for “all of our history” and Robin cries as it burns (pp. 9–11). Killingham then holds the giant schoolchildren hostage against Gaban; Gaban’s son Collun proudly cries “That’s my daddy!!” A flashback confirms Gaban and the giantess Ripley are Collun’s parents (“This is our son, Mr. Ya”). Gaban feigns surrender to buy “one second” to save the children and the library, but is shot down by a barrage of arrows and falls off the cliff, apologizing — the children screaming “Daddyyy!!” (pp. 12–17). Killingham turns on Brook, using a memory/dream power (“Allow me to show you…”), and — invoking “Great Imu” and “the dominance of God” — proclaims Elbaf ablaze (pp. 18–19).

• Scopper Gaban is “Mr. Ya.” The Roger-Pirates senior fighter has lived on Elbaf raising a family; the crew IDs him — “the left arm of the King of the Pirates! The counterpart to Rayleigh!!” (p. 5). He is the human ex-pirate husband seeded Ch. 1135.
• Gaban and Ripley are Collun’s parents. Flashback: “What a gift you’ve given me, Ripley… my lifelong treasure… This is our son, Mr. Ya.” (p. 15). Collun is the human/giant hybrid child; “That’s my daddy!!” (p. 13).
• Gaban’s blade counters immortality. He slices the “immortal” Sommers apart (“How was he able to slice up a guy who’s immortal?! That’s got to be a crucial secret!!”, p. 8) — the payoff-tell seeded Ch. 1148 (“What? It’s not coming back”).
• The Owl Library is burned.
