Black-flame power wielded by Imu’s descended form at Elbaf: “Omen… is my… military might!!! A power that lurks within all things!!” (Ch. 1181 pp. 6–7; NAMED on-page Ch. 1180 p. 7). Manifests as jagged-grinned beasts, lances, giant jaws and weapon-constructs of black flame (Ch. 1181 pp. 4–10); sears Loki’s bare hand on contact (p. 12). Named the third leg of the Domination trinity — “the envy that seeks to achieve one’s goals” (p. 9). The “lurks within all things” phrasing parallels Haki’s “lurks in every living being” — possible third universal power system; candidate retro-explanation for the Gorosei-associated black flames/lightning .

The name (name-etymology)

Omen is written 魔気 and read オーメン.

• Written 魔気 — maki, “demon-aura / demonic ki.” 魔 ma is “demon / evil spirit,” the same character as in 悪魔の実 akuma no mi, “Devil Fruit”; 気 ki is breath/aura/energy. Written, the power’s name is literally demon-breath.
• Read オーメン — the English word “omen” (Latin omen, a prophetic sign of what is coming). Spoken, the power’s name is a portent.
• A third register, from Imu itself — Ch. 1181 Imu gives the same kanji 魔気 the furigana ちから (chikara, “power”), alongside calling it its 軍事力 (gunji-ryoku, “military might”). One compound, three readings: demon-aura / portent / power.
• Why it matters: Ch. 1192 the flames are drawn for the first time as grinning, eyed, talking imp-heads that jeer at Luffy. That is not a new property so much as the kanji rendered literally — the substance has been named “demon-breath” since Ch. 1180. See Imu’s Omen Black Flames Are Grinning Speaking Entities.

What we know

• Ch. 1180 p. 7: the black flames are NAMED on-page — “OMEN.” (chapter-title drop) — as the “Great One” (Imu’s descended form) wields them at Western Village.
• Ch. 1181 pp. 6–7: “Omen… is my… military might!!! A power that lurks within all things!!” — Imu’s own naming + framing.
• Ch. 1181 pp. 4–10: manifests as jagged-grinned beasts, lances, giant jaws, and weapon-constructs of black flame.
• Ch. 1181 p. 9: named the third leg of the Domination trinity — “the envy that seeks to achieve one’s goals.”
• Ch. 1181 p. 12: sears Loki’s bare hand on contact.
• Ch. 1188: the Omen yields two named blades in one chapter — “STIGMA!” (p. 14) and “BLADE OF NOTHINGNESS— VOHU.” (p. 15, drawn out of the black mass as a flame-edged katana, then carried through the withered forest on p. 16 with the WG cross on Imu’s cloak). This is the Ch. 1189 “granted access to the 19 World Weapons” mechanism in action one chapter before 1189 — the same demonstration the note otherwise credits to Ch. 1190 (Honebami Toshiro). The flames also talk here (“Down!! Down!!” / “Huh? He dodged!!” / “Below us!!”, p. 4) and fly as homing bomb-heads that Luffy has to swat down with Gum-Gum Jet Gatling (p. 9) — i.e. the flame agency datum below is already on the page at 1188, four chapters before 1192. • Ch. 1192: the Omen produces a named defensive art — “Shield of Emptiness — Tohu va-Vohu” (p.8), incanted “Tohu.” then “Vohu.” across the two preceding panels (p.7, read right-to-left) — a wall of the black substance with an eye-studded blade at its heart. It stops Gear-5 punches cold and is cracked only by Luffy’s hammer-launched Gum-Gum Dawn Thor Bullet (p.15). ⚠ Distinct from the Ch. 1189 founder-blades Tohu and Vohu (VIZ 1189 p.15 letters the roll-call “BLADE OF CHAOS, TOHU! VOHU! NEMESIS!”) — do not conflate. ⚠ Dating pin: 1192 is the first use of the pair and of the shield technique, but the blade Vohu alone is named on-page four chapters earlier — “BLADE OF NOTHINGNESS— VOHU.” Ch. 1188 p. 15, where it is swung offensively (VIZ also titles ch. 1188 “Vohu”). So: Vohu first named @1188, re-used and paired with Tohu into the shield @1192.
• Ch. 1192: the Omen flames are shown as animate, grinning, speaking entities — imp-heads with eyes and teeth that swarm Luffy and taunt him: “Ack!!”, ”?!!”, “Give it up!”, “Gua ha ha!”, “Whoa!”, “Hmm?” (pp.5–6). Their nature (wills / souls / summons) is unstated.

Chronology / structure

• Ch. 1180 — first on-page naming; marks targets (The Omen Black Flames Mark The Great Ones Targets).
• Ch. 1181 — doctrine exposition; slotted into Domination.
• Ch. 1188 — produces two named blades at Elbaf, “Stigma!” (p.14) and “Blade of Nothingness — Vohu.” (p.15); the flames speak and home in on their target. First on-page naming of Vohu.
• Ch. 1191 — fights as a distinct beast-form in The Underworld; takes Gungnir through the mass; Honebami’s wielder settled as Imu (VIZ).
• Ch. 1192 — first named defensive art (“Shield of Emptiness — Tohu va-Vohu”), which pairs the already-named Vohu (Ch. 1188) with Tohu; the flames rendered as animate, grinning, speaking imp-heads.
