Chapter 1072: The Weight of Memory

Summary

A MADS flashback opens on Vegapunk declaring a creation a “success” — “a true and undeniable human being” the world may not accept (p. 2). In the present, Jewelry Bonney rampages through the Egghead Labophase, using her age-stripping power to de-age both Luffy and Vegapunk into helpless children while demanding to know why Vegapunk killed her father, Kuma (pp. 2–8). Vegapunk reveals the decision to take away Kuma’s free will “came from none other than Kuma himself,” and that he made a promise never to tell Bonney the reason — “Kuma is a great man.” A second MADS flashback shows a young Vegapunk and young Kuma researching the soul (21 grams) and memory; Vegapunk coaxes Kuma into using his paws to externalize his pain and memories into a giant paw-shaped bubble, which Bonney now recognizes: “This is my father’s memory, isn’t it?” (pp. 9–11). Meanwhile the present-day Kuma climbs the Red Line toward Mariejois from Red Port, shot at by Marines (pp. 5, 10). On Egghead, autonomous Seraphim units breach the Labophase; Zoro and Brook fight while CP0 (Rob Lucci, Kaku, Stussy) presses a mission to destroy the lab before Vegapunk emerges — and the lab is blown apart (pp. 11–16). In the final beat, Stussy turns on CP0, biting Kaku to “put him to sleep,” and is captioned as “MADS clone experiment, Successful Subject No. 1 — clone of Miss Buckingham Stussy, Rocks Pirates” (p. 17).

New reveals

• Stussy is an artificial clone. Closing caption (p. 17): “MADS clone experiment, successful subject No. 1” / “clone of Miss Buckingham Stussy, Rocks Pirates.” The CP0 agent Stussy is a MADS-grown clone of a Rocks Pirates member.
• The opening flashback is (implicitly) Stussy’s creation. Vegapunk: “I know that she is a living, breathing person… a true and undeniable human being!! It was a success.” (p. 2) — captioned “Dr. Vegapunk, Director of MADS, Laboratory for Peace.” The chapter bookends this declaration with the clone reveal.
• Vegapunk took Kuma’s free will at Kuma’s own request. “The decision to take away his free will… came from none other than Kuma himself!!!” (p. 6). Vegapunk made a promise to Kuma never to tell Bonney the reason why (p. 6) — “if I tell you why, Bonney… it will only hurt you” (p. 5).
• Kuma is Bonney’s father (reinforced on-page): Bonney’s whole interrogation is “Why did you kill my father?!!” directed at Vegapunk about Kuma (pp. 5–8).
• Kuma’s Nikyu Nikyu power externalizes pain and memory. In a MADS flashback Vegapunk theorizes pain/memories are neuron signals that can be “foisted off onto others”; Kuma’s paws “take pain, supposedly invisible, and give it form” — producing a giant paw-bubble holding “enough pain to be lethal” (pp. 9–10).
• Seraphim authority hierarchy (chart, p. 13): Five Elders → Vegapunk → Sentomaru → Authority Chip (CP0); the Seraphim are “absolutely loyal to all of Im’s orders.” They carry “just enough personality” to act autonomously and breached the Labophase on their own when the barrier dropped.
• Stussy betrays CP0, biting Kaku to put him to sleep (“What did I do? I only put him to sleep”) and turning on Lucci (p. 17). Hints at a sleep-inducing bite ability.
