The seed

Named Ch. 1180 as Imu’s “military might” and shown Ch. 1189–Ch. 1190 producing oath-weapons, the Omen has until now read as black fire/mist. Giving it faces and dialogue is a deliberate escalation: it implies the Omen is populated.

⚑ The name already said so . “Omen” is written 魔気 — maki, “demon-aura / demonic ki” — and read オーメン, the English word omen (Latin omen, a portent of what is coming). The 魔 is the same “demon” character as in 悪魔の実 (akuma no mi, “Devil Fruit”). So the substance was never named as fire: since Ch. 1180 its written name has been “demon-breath,” and @1192 simply draws it — grins, eyes, teeth, jeering voices. The animacy this note records is a payoff of the kanji, not a new property. (Imu’s own Ch. 1181 gloss layers a third reading: the same 魔気 given the furigana ちから, “power.”)

The payoff

(Not yet. payoff_chapter stays BLANK; status: pending.)

Watch for a later reveal that ties these to the Covenants (The Covenant, Depths Covenant) or to whatever Imu’s Domination doctrine absorbs.

Why this matters

⚠ MERGE-WATCH. Three distinct properties of the same substance are now on record and must be kept apart until the story converges them:

Do NOT fold now. If a future chapter shows one mechanism behind all three, the weave should merge them; until then the cluster is a test of whether Oda is layering a single power or three unrelated visual habits.
