Reasoning

Oda’s backstory-bridge grammar (tie a present antagonist to a crewmate’s oldest unresolved history) is on full display: Killingham’s dream-power (@1149) is the delivery vehicle that resurfaces the memory, and the 70-year Esperia flashback (@1183–1186) exists precisely to canonize Shuri as a real, developed person so the present-day identity can land. The arithmetic is stated on-page (“if it’s really her, then she must be 77 years old right now,” @1183) — Oda only does the math out loud when he intends to pay it off. The @1187 cliffhanger physically stages the reveal: a woman sealed in unbreakable ice, unmeltable-by-force, that “suddenly begins to melt” the instant Brook names her.

Resolution

2026-07-24 — Status: partially-confirmed via Ch. 1188 (corroborated Ch. 1189).

What happened: Imu’s own descended combat form addresses Gunko’s frozen body as “Princess Shuri” (“Gunko… thou hast yet to break the ice…”, 1188 p.11) — the first time an in-story authority figure, not just Brook, names the identity — and at 1189 the previously-unbreakable ice fully thaws as Brook again cries “Princess Shuri!!” The Celestial-Dragon / Holy-Land-preservation backbone (Shuri revealed a Celestial Dragon put on a WG ship as Esperia fell, 1186) supports the “preserved by the Holy Land” half of the claim.

What we got right / wrong: The resemblance-is-an-identity read gained a diegetic assertion from the ranking party (Imu), which is materially stronger than Brook’s earlier eyewitness resemblance-claim — the core Gunko=Shuri sub-claim and the WG-preservation sub-claim both advanced. But the vault correctly still holds the same-person identity OPEN: the face has not been redrawn as a confirmed match, Nami’s “she’s a Celestial Dragon, so it must be someone else” objection is uncontradicted, “three different people in her” leaves a composite/possession escape, and the specific bipolar-iris preservation-motive remains single-chapter inference. No full on-page equivalence yet — hence partial, not confirmed.

Confidence calibration check: We filed at 0.60; in retrospect this was well-calibrated — the identity kept advancing exactly as the densifying-double grammar predicted (authority naming + staged thaw), while Oda withheld the flat confirmation, which is why we never priced it above the coin-flip-plus band.

2026-07-29 — Re-scored; the frontier is unchanged at 1189, the same chapter this note was last corroborated against, so no new settling evidence exists and it holds partially-confirmed. The re-check confirms nothing at or before 1189 flips or breaks the claim: Ch. 1189 shows the frozen body thawing and named “Princess Shuri” as Brook’s team reaches her — consistent with, but not a flat on-page equivalence of, Gunko and Shuri. No refuter fired: there is no descendant / clone / bait-and-switch reveal. But Nami’s “she must be someone else” objection is still uncontradicted, the “three different people in her” composite escape is still open, and no panel yet redraws the face as a confirmed match or states the bipolar-iris preservation motive outright.

What would refute this

• Nami’s standing objection (@1183, uncontradicted on-page): “she’s a Celestial Dragon! So it must be someone else, right?!” — the identity could resolve as a descendant / memory-echo / deliberate lookalike vessel rather than the literal same woman. If the reveal is “Shuri’s granddaughter” or “a Holy-Land clone/vessel wearing Shuri’s face,” the literal-identity claim fails.
• “Three different people in her” (@1186) leaves room for Gunko to be a composite/possession case (Imu-piloted per @1174) in which “Shuri” is only one occupant — a partial, not full, match.
• The melting ice could reveal someone else entirely (a bait-and-switch), or leave the face obscured for several more chapters, so “confirmed on-page soon” is the softest part of the claim.
• The bipolar-iris → why-she-was-preserved motive is inference from a single chapter; the actual reason the Holy Land kept her could be unrelated to the eyes (e.g., her Manmayer bloodline, or Imu’s covenant mechanics).
