Imu's Shield Of Emptiness Tohu Va-Vohu Names The Formless Void

The seed
Tohu wa-bohu (תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ) is the Hebrew phrase in Genesis 1
describing the earth before creation — conventionally rendered “formless and void” / “without form, and void.” VIZ’s own gloss, “Shield of Emptiness,” makes the reading explicit rather than incidental.p.9 then shows the full true form holding two ornate cupped-guard cutlasses aloft, answering the chapter note’s open question about the uncaptioned blades: they are Tohu and Bohu, not Nemesis/Gram. So the technique name is not a decorative Hebrew tag — it is the component list. See The World Weapons Are The Nineteen Founders Swords Wielded By The Holy Knight Houses.
This is a seed→payoff on the vault’s own @1189 etymology call. At Ch. 1189 the World-Weapons roll-call named Tohu and Bohu as two separate blades, and the vault logged the Hebrew tohu wa-bohu reading at confidence: high before the two were ever used together. Three chapters later Oda cashes it: the two blades are combined into one technique named with the full Genesis phrase. A name-etymology prediction that paid inside four chapters.
Name etymology (name-etymology technique)
- Written vs. spoken. The callout is printed 空虚の盾 — kūkyo no tate, “Shield of Emptiness” — with トーフー・ワー・ボーフー (Tōfū wā Bōfū) as the furigana. VIZ letters the kanji-half as the gloss and the furigana-half as the name — “Shield of Emptiness—Tohu va-Vohu” — preserving both registers. Same bilingual grammar as Hajrudin’s Gungnir (英雄の槍 / グングニル).
- The Hebrew. Tōhū wā-ḇōhū (תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ), Genesis 1:2: “and the earth was without form, and void.” תֹהוּ tohu = formlessness, futility, trackless waste; בֹהוּ bohu = emptiness, void. Together they name the pre-creation condition of the world — not “nothing,” but unformed everything.
- Why VIZ writes “Vohu,” not “Bohu.” Biblical Hebrew begadkefat spirantisation: the ב of בֹהוּ takes no dagesh after the vav-conjunction, so the received reading is /toˈhu vaˈvohu/ — tohu va-vohu. VIZ’s spelling is the more accurate transliteration of the Masoretic phrase; the wiki/scanlation “Tohu wa-Bohu” is the Latinised academic form. Both are the same words. (VIZ correspondingly letters the sword itself “Blade of Nothingness—Vohu.”)
- The component kanji do the same work twice. 混沌 (konton) is the standard Japanese word for cosmogonic primordial chaos; 虚無 (kyomu) is philosophical nothingness/nihility. So even a reader who misses the Hebrew gets “Chaos Sword + Nothingness Sword → Shield of Emptiness.” Oda encoded the reference twice, in two writing systems, for two audiences.
- The blades pre-date the naming by 285 chapters. Both cutlasses are visible — mossed and rusted — planted before the Empty Throne at Ch. 907, long before either was named Ch. 1189 or used @1192.
- ⚠ Not asserted: that “emptiness/void” explains Imu’s nature, its Devil Fruit, or the Void Century. The name is Hebrew scripture-quotation; whether Oda loads it is the open question this note tracks. (Also unasserted: the Avestan reading of vohu — “good,” as in Vohu Manah — which has no support here; the Genesis pairing with tohu settles it.) ⚠ Also not evidence: the old bōfū = 暴風 “howling storm” homophone gloss that circulated with the 1188 scanlation is a fan translator’s note — VIZ 1188 prints no translator note on any page — so it may be cited only as a clearly-marked non-VIZ gloss. The vault’s own reading (that the bōfū sound rides on ボーフー = Bohu) stands on its own and does not depend on it.
The payoff
(Not yet. payoff_chapter stays BLANK; status: pending.)
Why it matters: One Piece’s endgame turns on an erased century and a world that was remade. A sovereign whose signature defence is literally the void before creation is a name-etymology seed pointing at Imu Identity, Void Century and Ancient Kingdom, and Domination. It also sits beside the Empty Throne naming — “empty” recurring as Imu’s own vocabulary.

Why this matters
Oda’s habit: a technique name that is only flavour on first hearing and load-bearing on re-read. The Hebrew creation-formula sits on the same shelf as the Norse regalia of Elbaf (Ragnir, Gungnir, Nidhoggr) and the Judeo-Christian register already attached to the founders’ arsenal. Track whether “emptiness / void” ever becomes an explanation of Imu rather than a decoration on it.
