Why this matters
This is the load-bearing identity-reveal of the Alabasta saga. The chapter delivers the reveal via the antagonist (Mr. 5 / Miss Valentine), not via the protagonist herself — Oda’s preferred grammar for high-load-bearing identity canonizations. The reveal is the trigger that:
- Ejects Vivi from Baroque Works (her Frontier-Agent cover is now blown).
- Enrolls her with the Straw Hat Pirates (Igaram begs Sanji and Zoro to escort her to Alabasta on page 19 — escort-contract premise).
- Sets up the entire Alabasta-saga arc-shape (Vivi-as-temporary-nakama running the Crocodile-counter-mission with the Straw Hats).
- Pre-installs the photograph-as-identity-reveal-vehicle that Imu later re-uses for the Vivi-bounty-poster-defacement (Ch. 906) and I want Vivi declaration (Ch. 1179).
Why this is load-bearing for the Imu / Nefertari-D.-Lily lineage payoff
The reveal-grammar is the structural template Imu re-uses 800 chapters later:
- Ch. 0110: Antagonist (Miss Valentine) holds the protagonist-ally’s photograph and reads off the identity. The reveal is broadcast via the antagonist’s voice, not the protagonist’s.
- Ch. 0906: Imu defaces the photograph of Vivi (among five total: Luffy + Shirahoshi + Blackbeard + Vivi + Cobra). The defacement is the inverse-grammar isomorph of the Ch. 0110 reveal — Imu unmakes the photograph-identity that Miss Valentine made-public at Ch. 0110.
- Ch. 1179: Imu declares I want Vivi — the name-form Imu uses is the Vivi (first-name only) that Vivi herself rejects in Ch. 0110 (“YOU FIEND!” reaction to having her name spoken).
The photograph-as-identity-vehicle and the antagonist-as-name-narrator are the same grammar in all three chapters — Ch. 0110 is the seed-anchor; Ch. 0906 and Ch. 1179 are the payoff re-keys.
The payoff cascade
This chapter is both seed and payoff for the identity-naming beat. The cascade from Ch. 0110 forward:
- Ch. 110 — Vivi named as Nefertari Vivi, Princess of Alabasta on-page.
- Ch. 906 — Imu defaces Vivi’s bounty poster — first Imu on-page beat, indexes Vivi as a target.
- Ch. 1085 — Nefertari D. Lily revealed as the missing 20th king who refused to ascend; Vivi is canonized as the modern-era heir.
- Ch. 1179 — Imu’s stated obsession: “I want Vivi”. The personal-target obsession that the Ch. 0110 name-canonization pre-loaded is now explicit.
Earliest caller
On-page reveal — no pre-call window. This is the chapter where Vivi’s princess-identity becomes canonical text. Pre-Ch. 0110 Egyptian-reference readers had decoded the Nefertari name as a real Egyptian queen-title (via Oda’s Vol. 17 SBS), but the surname itself was not on-page before this chapter — the fan reading required the SBS to be backfilled with the eventual on-page utterance.
