- **Chapter title and opening tableau — *Chapter 109: A QUESTION OF DUTY* / Koby & Helmeppo's Chronicle of Toil Vol. 22: 'We're So Useless'** (page 1). The chapter opens not with the main plot but with the **cover-story title card** for the Koby-Helmeppo Marine-chore-boy cover-arc, now at its **22nd installment**. The image: both Koby and Helmeppo crouched in defeat, faces twisted in mortified anguish, suspended below a row of Marine officers' legs (the boys are at floor-level being silently observed by superiors). A small bat-creature dangles upside-down from a rope in the background (a recurring cover-story prop). The volume-subtitle *'We're So Useless'* is the cover-arc's first explicit articulation of the boys' **self-recognition of inadequacy** — the prior cover-installments have shown them being assigned chores and getting punished; this one shows them **internalizing their failure**. The cover-arc's character-development pattern (chore-failure → self-criticism → resolve to improve) is locked in here. Forward-pattern: the cover-arc is structurally the **slow-burn-Marine-rank-grind** that will eventually yield Koby's promotion to Marine Captain (post-time-skip) and Helmeppo's competence-pivot. **The chapter-109 cover is the first cover-installment where the boys verbally name their own inadequacy** — the *useless* doctrine.
- **Mr. 9 (crown headdress + tights) and Ms. Wednesday + Igaram tableau — *How disgraceful* / *Losing to a lone pirate swordsman* / *The boss left the town in our care*** (page 2). After a *DOOM!!* SFX establishing-shot of Whisky Peak in ruin (the Ch. 108-aftermath of Zoro's solo Whisky Peak combat), three Baroque Works officers stand in a wreckage-strewn plaza: **Mr. 9** (lower-left, in dark tights with a crown headdress, polka-dot accents), an unnamed tall figure in patterned tights and ringed-pattern footwear (background-left), and **Ms. Wednesday** (right side — ponytailed blonde-haired woman in a dark ankle-length dress with curl accents — this is **Vivi in her Baroque Works alias-disguise**). The lower-tier panel shows **Mr. 8 / Igaram** (curly-purple-hair officer with mustache and bowtie, formal jacket) and Mr. 9 in close-up. Dialogue (top, off-panel as a banner-caption): *'HOW DISGRACEFUL.'* Mr. 9 (close-up, with shooting-star sweat-tear of frustration): *'…AFTER THE BOSS LEFT THE TOWN IN OUR CARE.'* / *'LOSING TO A LONE PIRATE SWORDSMAN…'* Igaram (close-up, eyes-closed, gravely): *'THIS MEANS WE'VE FAILED HIM.'* The chapter installs **three load-bearing seeds**: (1) the **Baroque Works hierarchy is real** — *the boss* exists off-page as a recognized authority (this is Mr. 0 / Crocodile, not yet named); (2) **the Baroque Works officers experience Zoro as an existential combat-threat** (a *lone pirate swordsman* defeats their multi-officer Whisky-Peak garrison); (3) **Ms. Wednesday and Igaram and Mr. 9 are operating as a coordinated officer-team** — they will shortly attempt to retake the town. **The *we failed him* doctrine is the first on-page utterance of *Baroque-Works-officers-are-accountable-to-the-boss* structure** — pre-loading the entire vertical-hierarchy-of-Mr.-Numbers reveal that opens at Whisky Peak and pays off across the Alabasta saga.
- **Zoro vs Mr. 9 — *Igarappa* saxophone-shotgun ambush as Mr. 8 reveal** (pages 3-4). Page 3 (top tier): Zoro stands sleepily in the wreckage, sword sheathed, half-asleep (*HAAA…!!*) with Mr. 9 in the foreground (silhouette-back-to-camera, polka-dot pants, crown). Mr. 9 raises an arm — *PLUP* — and an off-panel hand passes him a long instrument-shaped object. *BRUP BRUH BRAH!!* — a saxophone-shotgun fires off a barrage of projectiles at Zoro. *IGARAPPA!!!* — the **first named attack of Mr. 8 / Igaram**: *Igarappa*, a saxophone-shaped multi-barrel firearm. *WHOA!!* (Zoro evades). The chapter installs **Igaram's Igarappa weapon** — a brass-instrument-disguised projectile weapon — as the **first canonical *concealed-weapon Baroque-Works-officer combat-grammar***. Forward-pattern: every later Baroque-Works officer-encounter features a *disguised-weapon-as-power* tell (Mr. 5's exploding boogers, Miss Goldenweek's color-trap paints, Bon Clay's transformation-mimicry, Mr. 2's body-swap).
- **Ms. Wednesday + Karoo the Ultra Spotbill first reveal — *Ready, Mr. 9!! / Ready, Ms. Wednesday!? / Come, Karoo!!*** (page 4). After Igaram's saxophone-shotgun barrage, the camera cuts to Ms. Wednesday (top-left close-up, ponytail flying, finger-snap pose): *'READY, MR. 9!!'* Mr. 9 (right close-up, grinning, with a star-shaped sweat-tear): *'READY, MS. WEDNESDAY!?'* Ms. Wednesday: *'COME, KAROO!!'* — *TWEEE / SHOOM!!* — and a giant pink-feathered duck-creature in helmet-and-saddle gear races into frame (*QUACK!*). The duck's caption-tag reads: **KAROO / THE ULTRA SPOTBILL**. *'DON'T JUST WAG YOUR TAIL… MOVE IT!'* (Mr. 9 commanding the duck). The chapter installs **Karoo** (Vivi's saddled Ultra-Spotbill mount, *spotbill* = a real duck-species, *Anas poecilorhyncha*) — first appearance of the duck-companion who will accompany Vivi from Whisky Peak through Alabasta and stay loyal to her after the Alabasta-arc-close. Karoo's saddle-rig includes water-barrels, weapon-holsters, and a feathered combat-helmet — he's outfitted as a **mounted-combat-bird**. Forward-pattern: Karoo becomes the **non-combatant-mascot of the Alabasta arc**, the loyal-bird-companion that mirrors Chopper's animal-pet register, and remains in Vivi's service in Alabasta after the Straw Hats depart.
- **Karoo mounts Mr. 9 backward — *Show him the powers that put a panther's to shame! / All right!! / Hey! Who told you to sit!?*** (page 5). Comedic beat: Ms. Wednesday is shown riding Karoo (full-body panel — Karoo with helmet, saddle, water-barrels, Vivi in ponytail riding-pose with whip-grip): *'SHOW HIM THE POWERS THAT PUT A PANTHER'S TO SHAME!'* (Vivi to Karoo, command-voice). Mr. 9 (off-panel close-up): *'ALL RIGHT!!'* But Karoo (still attached to Vivi mid-charge, *TM-p*) approaches the wrong target — sits down on Mr. 9 (*TA-DOOM! FWUMP!!*). Vivi: *'HEY! WHO TOLD YOU TO SIT!?'* / *'I WOULDN'T TURN YOUR BACK IF I WERE YOU.'* (Zoro, standing over with sword drawn, off-frame). The chapter installs **Karoo's comedic-tactical-incompetence register** — Karoo is a *combat-grade-bird that obeys imperfectly*, and the bird's failure-modes are systematically comedic. The *put-a-panther's-to-shame* framing canonizes Karoo as a **claimed-combat-tier** mount even though the bird's actual on-page combat-grammar is consistently slapstick. Forward-pattern: Karoo's mount-tier capacity (he can outrun camels across the Alabasta desert) is **earnest combat-grammar in the Alabasta arc proper**, but the bird's introductory frame establishes him as a **comedic-and-loyal sidekick**, not a serious combatant.
- **Mr. 9 *Bat of Guts!!* combat reveal — *This is a metal bat! / Hot-blooded… Bat of Guts!!*** (pages 6-7). Page 6 — Mr. 9 charges Zoro on Karoo's back (*WHIP WHIP WHIP*), shouting *'CAN YOU KEEP UP WITH MY ACROBATICS!?'* He swings a baseball-bat-shaped weapon at Zoro (*WHOOM!!*); Zoro counters with his sword and the impact *KRANG!!* the bat. Mr. 9: *'HOT-BLOODED…'* — and the bat resounds *KRANG* against Zoro's sword. Page 7: Mr. 9 (continuing the swing-cycle): *'…BAT OF GUTS!!!'* / *'THIS IS A METAL BAT! / KLANK!!'* (the bat strikes Zoro's blade with a metallic-on-metal SFX). Zoro (deadpan close-up): *'CAREFUL NOW… DON'T NICK YOUR SWORD!!'* (taunting). The chapter installs **Mr. 9's signature weapon — the *Bat of Guts*** — a **metal baseball bat** swung in *hot-blooded acrobatic combat-style*. The Baroque-Works-officer naming convention (*Bat of Guts*, *Igarappa*, etc.) installs the **whimsical-named-attack pattern** that will define every later Baroque-Works-officer combat-encounter. **First on-page combat-named attack from a Baroque-Works officer** (*Igarappa* on page 3 was the same-chapter beat; this is the second).
- **Mr. 9 + Karoo dual-attack — *Where are your acrobatics now? / Then take a good look!!*** (page 8). Zoro stands flat-footed, smirking; Mr. 9 (in mid-swing, bat extended, screaming): *'HMPH…'* / *'GRAH!! / HYAH!! / NYAH!!'* — *KLANK!! KLANK!! KLANG!!* — series of bat-strikes deflected by Zoro's three-sword stance (he draws Yubashiri/Wado, off-frame). Zoro: *'WHERE ARE YOUR "ACROBATICS" NOW?'* (taunting). Mr. 9 (mid-acrobatic-flip): *'THEN TAKE A GOOD LOOK!!'* (FWUP!! — Mr. 9 launches into an acrobatic flip with bat extended). The chapter installs the **Mr.-9-acrobatic-combat-style** — bat-plus-flips, gymnast-combat. Mid-page Zoro switches register from sleepy-defender to active-combatant. The right-bottom panel shows the **Whisky Peak townscape** (the cactus-shaped silhouetted buildings + church tower characteristic of the town's cake-cactus-and-grave aesthetic) — *WHOA…* (Mr. 9 off-frame, exclaiming as he registers Zoro's three-sword stance).
- **Zoro draws three swords — *Aaaah!!* / *Isn't there anyone worth fighting around here?*** (page 9). Top tier: Zoro stands in three-sword stance (Wado in mouth, Yubashiri and Kitetsu in hands) with Mr. 9 flat on his back behind him (*KRASH!!! KLAK KLAK THUD!!*). Mr. 9 (defeated, with star-shaped sweat-mark): *'YOU WANT SOMEONE WORTH FIGHTING!? THAT WOULD BE ME!! PREPARE TO DIE, MR. BUSHIDO!!'* (defiant-but-defeated). Zoro (deadpan back-to-camera, scratching his head): *'ISN'T THERE ANYONE WORTH FIGHTING AROUND HERE?'* Then — *VWOOM*… *enchanting…* — Ms. Wednesday begins a **Vertigo Dance** (*VWOOM VWOOM VWOOM* — she spins in a circle pose with her arms outstretched). Bottom-right inset close-up: Ms. Wednesday (winking, suggestive smile, hand to face, fur-collared dark dress, bullseye-spiral-pattern bra/halter visible): *'TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT MY OUTFIT.'* (heart-accent SFX). **Translator footnote on the page**: *'*BUSHIDO MEANS "THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI" IN JAPANESE.'* The chapter installs **(a)** the **Bushido-as-Zoro-epithet** — *Mr. Bushido* is the Baroque-Works-coded nickname for Zoro, established here as enemy-officer terminology before it becomes Vivi's permanent friend-address (Vol-23 SBS confirms Vivi will call Zoro *Mr. Bushido* for the rest of her life), and **(b)** Ms. Wednesday's **Vertigo Dance** combat-technique — a hypnotic-distraction attack using her body and bullseye-spiral outfit as a visual-disorientation device. The bullseye-spiral wardrobe is **first installed here as a combat-prop** — Vivi's Baroque-Works costume is *literally weaponized hypnotic-visual-pattern* (rhyming with Django's hypnosis-ring tell from Ch. 28-31).
- **Vertigo Dance ambushes Zoro — *Good boy / Hee hee!* / *And now for the finale…*** (page 10). Top tier: Mr. 9 (in foreground, silhouette-back-to-camera) reacts to Ms. Wednesday's spinning hypnotic-dance with stunned *!?* word-balloon. *VWOOM VWOOM!* — Vivi continues spinning. Zoro (right close-up, sleepy-blank face): *'UNH…'* — the spinning-pattern is affecting him. Middle tier: Ms. Wednesday in close-up (with a wicked-grin): *'GOOD BOY / HEE HEE!'* (mocking-praise as the hypnotic-dance lands its effect). Bottom tier: Ms. Wednesday (back to-camera, hair-flung mid-spin) brandishes a slasher-weapon (some kind of unwound-throwing-disc): *'AND NOW FOR THE FINALE…'* / *'ALL RIGHT, KAROO!!'* / *'PEACOCK SLASHER!!!'* — *DOOM! QUACK! FWIP FWIP!* — Karoo launches mid-air with what appears to be **peacock-feather throwing-disc weapons** mounted on his saddle. The chapter installs **Ms. Wednesday's *Peacock Slasher*** — her signature Baroque-Works-disguise attack: a **peacock-feather-themed multi-projectile throwing weapon launched from Karoo's mount-gear**. The *peacock* iconography (royal-color, eye-pattern, vanity-bird) is Vivi-coded heraldry — the disguise's combat-aesthetic foreshadows Vivi's later Alabasta-royal-iconography (the *Peacock Slasher* was the Baroque-Works alias for what is structurally **the Princess of Alabasta's combat-style**). Forward-pattern: Vivi's combat-style in Alabasta proper uses **Slashers / Peacock-themed projectile weapons** consistently — the Whisky Peak debut is the **first installation of Vivi-as-projectile-combatant**.
- **Karoo flies the wrong direction — *You're going the wrong way!!!*** (page 11). Karoo (mid-air, mouth-open *QUACK!!*) flies off-target — *FWIP FWIP FWIP* — with peacock-blades extending in the *opposite* direction from Zoro. Vivi (in stunned reaction): *'YOU'RE GOING THE WRONG WAY!!!'* (yelling at the bird). *SHINAK!! / ZOO0000 / I'M FALLING…* (Vivi mid-bird-stumble as Karoo loses altitude). Then Igaram (in the bottom panel): *'IGARAPPA!!!'* (his saxophone-shotgun reasserts itself with a *BBRUH BRRAH* barrage). Zoro (back-to-camera at right edge, *STOP*): *'I'M EMBARRASSED TO FIGHT THESE GUYS.'* The chapter installs **Karoo's directional-incompetence comedic register** — the bird's first-impression on the reader is *can't aim, can't obey, sits on wrong targets* — establishing the **comedic-mascot-bird tier** that Karoo will occupy through the rest of the series. Zoro's *embarrassed-to-fight-these-guys* line is the **first on-page Zoro-evaluation of Baroque-Works officer tier** — the Baroque-Works officers of Whisky Peak grade are **beneath Zoro's stated tier-threshold**, foreshadowing the much-higher-tier Mr. 1 / Mr. 0 / Crocodile encounters in Alabasta proper.
- **Igaram traps Zoro in a 'rabbit hole' bunker — *Fleeing down a rabbit hole won't save you / Now I'll give you a taste… of real fear.*** (page 12). *BRUP BRUP BRUH BRUH! WHOOSH!!* — Igaram fires another saxophone-barrage; Zoro evades by leaping into a cactus-shaped town-architecture niche (a rabbit-hole-style hidden tunnel between the town's buildings). Igaram (close-up of his face, with his characteristic curly purple hair filling the panel — *NOW I'LL GIVE YOU A TASTE…*): *'…OF REAL FEAR.'* Mid-page: a wide-shot of the empty plaza with Zoro gone-from-view (*TMP!*). The chapter installs **the *Whisky Peak architecture is a combat-environment* doctrine** — the cactus-cake-shaped buildings have **hidden tunnels and trap-passages** that Baroque-Works officers use as combat-terrain. This is the first installation of **Whisky-Peak-as-Baroque-Works-trap-town**: the town's *welcome-the-pirate-with-revelry* exterior conceals a **garrison-of-bounty-hunting officers operating an ambush-infrastructure**. The *rabbit-hole* metaphor explicitly invokes **Alice-in-Wonderland register** — the town is a *fairy-tale-overlay* combat environment where surface-friendly reality conceals weaponized substructure. Forward-pattern: every later Baroque-Works/Crocodile-controlled location (Rainbase Casino, Crocodile's Underground Tomb) operates on the same *surface-friendly-but-trap-infrastructure* register.
- **Mr. 9 traps Zoro with *Home-Run Hide-a-Bat!! / Shotgun!!*** (page 13). Top tier: Mr. 9 (full-body, arms raised, *TA-DAH!!*) is shown with a *KLANK!!* SFX — he reveals a hidden bat-trick (the *Home-Run Hide-a-Bat*, a concealed-secondary-bat). Right-tier dialogue: *'WHAT TO DO…?'* (Zoro thinking, in narration). *'THAT'S ONE NASTY SHOTGUN.'* (acknowledging Igaram's saxophone-gun). Mr. 9 (mid-frame): *'BUT I'LL GET YOU FOR IT!! / IT WASN'T MY FAULT YOU FELL.'* / *'THAT WAS SOME TRICK YOU PULLED!!'* Bottom tier: *WHUP WHUP* — Mr. 9 swings the hidden bat in *WHAP!! BOOM!!* combat-strike with *HOME-RUN HIDE-A-BAT!!* labeled. The chapter installs **Mr. 9's secondary-bat trick** — a **two-bat trick-combat-style** (one held visible, one concealed for a surprise-second-strike). The *trick-bat* register parallels Mr. 8 / Igaram's *concealed-saxophone-gun* — both Whisky-Peak Baroque-Works officers operate on **deception-as-combat-grammar**, in keeping with the town's *welcome-the-pirate-but-trap-him* operating logic.
Arc: Whisky Peak · Saga: Alabasta · Volume: 13
Summary
The cover-story title-card opens with Koby & Helmeppo’s Chronicle of Toil Vol. 22: We’re So Useless (page 1) — both Marine chore-boys crouched at the feet of unseen officers, internalizing their own inadequacy for the first time in the cover-arc.
The main plot returns to Whisky Peak in the aftermath of Zoro’s Ch. 108 solo-massacre of the town’s bounty-hunter garrison. A trio of surviving Baroque Works officers — Mr. 9 (crown-headdress, polka-dot tights, baseball-bat combat-style), Mr. 8 / Igaram (curly-purple-haired, saxophone-shaped firearm, formal jacket), and Ms. Wednesday (ponytailed blonde in dark dress with bullseye-spiral wardrobe — this is Vivi in her Baroque-Works alias) — stand in the ruined plaza. “How disgraceful. After the boss left the town in our care, losing to a lone pirate swordsman… This means we’ve failed him.” The off-page boss is the first canonical reference to Mr. 0 / Crocodile as Baroque Works leadership (page 2).
The officers attack Zoro in a coordinated three-officer combat-team:
- Igaram fires Igarappa — a saxophone-disguised multi-barrel firearm — at Zoro from concealment (pages 3, 11, 15-16).
- Ms. Wednesday summons Karoo, the Ultra Spotbill — a saddle-mounted giant duck-bird with weapon-rigging — and rides into combat. Karoo’s introduction is comedic: he sits on Mr. 9, flies in the wrong direction, and fails to land Vivi’s Peacock Slasher attack on Zoro (pages 4-5, 10-11).
- Mr. 9 charges with the Bat of Guts (a metal baseball-bat) and his concealed second-bat trick Home-Run Hide-a-Bat (pages 6-9, 13).
- Ms. Wednesday performs the Vertigo Dance (a hypnotic spinning-and-spiraled-wardrobe distraction-attack) followed by the Peacock Slasher (peacock-feather-themed throwing-blades launched from Karoo’s mount-gear). The on-page translator footnote on page 9 — “*Bushido means ‘the way of the samurai’ in Japanese” — canonizes Ms. Wednesday’s nickname for Zoro, Mr. Bushido as the chapter’s most load-bearing terminology install. (Vol-23 SBS will later confirm Vivi calls Zoro Mr. Bushido permanently for life.)
The chapter’s combat-climax (pages 12-17) is a coordinated steel-rope ambush — the officers lash Zoro’s arm with a rope while Ms. Wednesday grabs Luffy as hostage (Luffy is still passed-out drunk from the Whisky-Peak banquet-trap of Ch. 108). “Try anything stupid, and I’ll kill your precious friend.” Zoro’s deadpan response: “Fool. At least be awake when you’re taken hostage!!” (page 15). Igaram then fires his upgraded multi-barrel Igarap-pappa through his own teammate’s position (page 16) — Ms. Wednesday registers the friendly-fire with shock (“What is he? Some kinda toy!?”), the first on-page Vivi-doubts-her-own-faction beat. In the smoke, Zoro extracts both Luffy and Vivi from the impact-zone with a rope-cutting maneuver — Tug!! Whoosh!! (page 17). The chapter closes with Vivi displaced through the air, pulled out of her Baroque-Works combat-formation by Zoro’s intervention — the literal-grammar seed of her arc-long defection-trajectory into the Straw-Hat orbit.
Page 18 — SBS Question Corner — Oda introduces a reader named Richard, the self-appointed Facilitator of the Destruction of the SBS Takeover Gang. Two notable Q&A: (a) why don’t manga trousers rip during action scenes (joke answer), and (b) Tashigi’s glasses are canonical — she is “a little nearsighted, can see things up close but not from a distance” — the first Oda-canonized character-vision detail in the series.
New reveals
- Mr. 9 + Mr. 8 + Ms. Wednesday — the first on-page Baroque-Works officer-team operating as a coordinated combat-unit (page 2). The Baroque-Works hierarchy and Mr.-Number code-name system is implicitly canonized as a multi-officer-team-with-a-boss organization structure. The boss exists off-page as a recognized authority — pre-loading the Mr. 0 / Crocodile reveal.
- Vivi appears in disguise as Ms. Wednesday — first on-page combat-encounter with the Straw Hats (pages 2, 4-5, 9-11, 14-17). Her Peacock Slasher attack and bullseye-spiral wardrobe install the peacock-and-spiral combat-aesthetic that codes her as Alabasta-royalty even before her real identity is revealed.
- Karoo, the Ultra Spotbill (page 4) — Vivi’s saddle-mounted giant-duck combat-mount, first appearance. Comedic-incompetent in this chapter, but pre-loads his arc-long role as Vivi’s loyal companion.
- Mr. 8 / Igaram’s Igarappa saxophone-shotgun (page 3) — first disguised-weapon in the Baroque-Works officer-arsenal. Later in the chapter the weapon is upgraded to multi-barrel Igarap-pappa (page 16) — a convertible artillery system disguised as a brass instrument.
- Mr. 9’s Bat of Guts + Home-Run Hide-a-Bat (pages 7, 13) — metal-baseball-bat combat-style with concealed second-bat trick.
- Ms. Wednesday’s Vertigo Dance and Peacock Slasher (pages 9, 10) — hypnotic-distraction-via-spiral-wardrobe plus peacock-themed throwing-blades. The bullseye-spiral outfit is literally weaponized hypnotic-pattern.
- Whisky Peak architecture revealed as a combat-environment with trap-tunnels (page 12) — the cactus-cake townscape conceals hidden rabbit-hole tunnels that Baroque-Works officers use for ambush. The fleeing down a rabbit hole / Alice-in-Wonderland metaphor is explicit.
- Baroque-Works friendly-fire tolerance doctrine (page 16) — Igaram is willing to fire through Ms. Wednesday’s position to hit Zoro. Ms. Wednesday’s what is he? some kinda toy? shock-reaction is the first on-page seed of Vivi’s eventual defection from Baroque Works.
- Zoro’s save-the-enemy-from-her-own-faction’s-friendly-fire spare-doctrine (page 17) — Zoro extracts Vivi from Igaram’s friendly-fire barrage even though she was holding Luffy hostage seconds earlier. Same Zoro-spare-doctrine register as his Ch. 100 spare-of-Tashigi.
- Translator footnote canonizes Bushido (page 9) — VIZ’s on-page footnote ‘Bushido means the way of the samurai’ canonizes Ms. Wednesday’s nickname for Zoro — Mr. Bushido as the proper-noun-grade epithet that will become Vivi’s permanent friend-address (Vol-23 SBS confirms lifetime use).
- Cover-story Koby-Helmeppo Vol. 22: We’re So Useless (page 1) — first cover-installment where the boys verbally name their own inadequacy. Self-criticism-as-character-development register installed.
- SBS Vol-13: Tashigi nearsightedness confirmed as canon (page 18) — Oda canonizes the Marine-swordswoman’s vision-impairment that explains her glasses-removal-to-look-at-blades tell.
- SBS Vol-13: Facilitators of the Destruction of the SBS Takeover Gang counter-faction debuts — Richard, the reader who self-appoints as Oda’s protector against the Timmy-Ueda SBS-takeover-gang. Light meta-paratext.

Open questions raised
- Who is the boss? (Mr. 0 / Crocodile — but not yet named.)
- Why is Vivi (princess of Alabasta) operating as a Baroque-Works officer? (Defection-spy reveal pending.)
- Why is Igaram willing to shoot through Ms. Wednesday’s position? (His secret-loyalty-to-Vivi reveal pending — the friendly-fire is staged, or the Igaram-doesn’t-actually-want-to-hit-her nuance unspoken here.)
- Why does Zoro spare Vivi at the chapter’s end despite her hostage-taking? (Zoro-spare-doctrine — already canonical from Ch. 100 Tashigi-spare.)
- What is the full structure of Baroque Works (how many Mr.-Numbers, how the officer-numbering works, what the boss commands)?
