- The claim
- Imu's katakana 'Akuma no Mi' will be revealed as the prototype/root fruit from which all ordinary Devil Fruits descend — making every Devil Fruit a derived 'wish' shaped from Imu's primordial power, and explaining the cosmological 'sea-devils' framing seeded since Ch. 19.
The claim
Reasoning
The Nature-of-Devil-Fruits thread has accumulated four distinct foreshadowing techniques pointing at a single hidden mechanic, calibrating this prediction to confidence 0.7:
- misdirection-via-folk-myth (Ch 2, 13, 22; Gum-Gum Tree) — Oda has spent 20+ chapters establishing that in-world DF cosmology is uncorrected folk. Vegapunk’s Ch 1069 “fruits of hope” reveal demonstrates the folk-myth is intentional setup for a deeper cosmology, not the final word. The deeper cosmology requires a source.
- in-voice-cosmology-drop (Ch 1; Ch 19 “sea-devils”) — Shanks’s “the sea-devils enchanted the fruit” framing is the only in-voice cosmology with a malevolent agent attached. The Ch 1179 katakana Akuma no Mi reveal makes Shanks’s framing literal: there is a Devil and there is a fruit, and the fruit is the source-text.
- chekhov-explicit (Ch 11 — “each fruit is its own rulebook”; Ch 1179 katakana distinction) — the orthographic choice to render Imu’s fruit in katakana, distinct from every other on-panel fruit name, is a deliberate category-difference signal. Oda spent 1100+ chapters writing fruit names in kanji-or-hiragana before making this one in katakana. That is the chekhov gun.
- slow-drip — the sea-rejection mechanic (Ch 1), the multi-instance recognition (Ch 6, 8, 9, 11, 22), the folk-vs-real lore split (Ch 1069), and the katakana fruit-source (Ch 1179) — each drop tightens the same question without resolving it.
Four techniques converging on the same hypothesis ≈ 0.7. The prediction is not novel within the fandom but the vault’s technique-density makes it the forecast the evidence already supports.
Resolution
2026-05-17 — Status: still open (long-burn; load-bearing Ch. 1069 / 1179 evidence is post-Ch. 100).
Ch 1-100 verification: The within-corpus evidence (Ch. 1 Shanks’s “enchanted by sea-devils”, Ch. 2/13/22 folk-myth Gum-Gum Tree, Ch. 11 each fruit is its own rulebook, Ch. 100 first Logia debut via Smoker’s Plume-Plume Fruit) is consistent with the prediction’s folk-myth-conceals-deeper-cosmology framing. The katakana Akuma no Mi (Ch. 1179) and Vegapunk’s fruits-of-hope reveal (Ch. 1069) lie outside ch 1-100. Cannot be resolved with available evidence; status remains open.

Refuter-grep: none of the four named refuters has fired. Devil-Fruit origin is untouched at Ch. 1188/Ch. 1189, and the Ch. 1179 p. 17 caption “POWER: THE DEVIL’S FRUIT” still stands unqualified. One observation worth logging for the next scorer, short of any adjustment:
Supporting evidence
- Ch. 1 — Shanks’s “the sea-devils enchanted the fruit,” the only in-voice cosmology with a malevolent agent attached, alongside the sea-rejection mechanic.
- Ch. 2 — the folk-myth Gum-Gum Tree, part of the 20+ chapter install of uncorrected in-world Devil-Fruit cosmology.
- Ch. 19 — the “sea-devils” framing that the katakana reveal later makes literal: a Devil and a fruit.
- Ch. 1069 — Vegapunk’s “fruits of hope” reveal, showing the folk-myth is intentional setup for a deeper cosmology that needs a source.
- Ch. 1179 — the katakana Akuma no Mi rendered distinct from every other on-panel fruit name, a deliberate category-difference signal (the chekhov gun).
What would refute this
- Imu’s Akuma no Mi is revealed as a categorically-different power-class (e.g., a non-fruit manifestation, or a divine relic), making the prototype-fruit reading wrong.
- Vegapunk’s “fruits of hope” is given a non-Imu source — e.g., Joy Boy’s Nika is the prime fruit, or the fruits originate from the Moon / pre-Lunarian civilization.
- The katakana orthography turns out to be a stylistic choice for the weakened Elbaf form, not a category marker.
- Imu’s animating-buildings power is revealed as a Mythical Zoan variation rather than a fruit-generating prime.
