Name meaning
深海契約 (Shinkai Keiyaku) = literally 'Deep-Sea Contract': 深海 (shinkai) 'the deep sea / the depths' + 契約 (keiyaku) 'contract, pact.' It is the MIDDLE rung of a three-tier ocean-depth ladder administered by Imu — 浅海契約 Shallows ('shallow sea', Senkai Keiyaku) → 深海契約 Depths ('deep sea') → 深々海契約 Abyssal ('deep-deep sea', Shin-shinkai Keiyaku) — where descending 'depth' encodes BOTH escalating power granted and escalating surrender of one's will (the deeper the covenant, the more total Imu's remote control; @1168 the obedience clause literally lets Imu puppet Harald). The oceanic-abyss ladder rhymes with the arc's own imagery: Imu's order to 'create an abyss on Elbaph,' the throne-room Abyss Pentagram, and 'Harald's Abyss.' VIZ renders the plain word 契約 ('contract') as the theologically loaded **'Covenant'** — a sacred, binding pact with a god — fitting Imu as 'the True God' and the Knights of God; the Depths tier's reserved-for-13 detail further evokes a chosen/elect covenant. The near-homophone fan-alias 'Death's Covenant' (Depths ≈ Death's) chimes with the 'undying knight' outcome — a controlled living-undeath — but is mis-heard, not on-page confirmed.

Structural lore — what Oda has confirmed about this. Mysteries (unsolved questions) live in Vault/Threads/; this is what the world IS.

First named on-page as a tier Ch. 1167; mechanics shown Ch. 1168 p.13. A pact administered by Imu (“Mu”) at the Empty Throne: “those who have accepted the Depths Covenant are given immortality and strength… but must obey orders in return.” The mechanic behind the Holy Knights’ immortality. King King Harald accepted it ~14 yrs ago (agreeing to “be a slave” so “history would be atoned for”) and was transformed into a monstrous, scaled, horned “undying knight in service to Mu” — described by onlookers as “a weapon,” “more than a monster,” “immortal” (Ch. 1168 pp.10–13). The obedience clause let Imu remotely control Harald (“I’m being controlled, and Elbaph with me”).

What we know

  • Ch. 1179 the demonized giants are revealed to contain a beating STEEL heart (“A steel heart?!” B-BMP, p. 9); severed parts self-reassemble “like a magnet” (p. 8), heads stay conscious in boxes, and Franky’s read — “If we destroy THIS, they won’t be able to go back to normal?!” — frames the heart as the restoration keystone: destroy it and the giant may be un-savable.
  • Ch. 1167: The Depths Covenant is the middle tier of The Covenant — the WG’s three-stage sacred-contract system (Shallows / Depths / Abyssal); the deeper two tiers are “reserved for only 13 exclusive individuals… who can enter into a contract with the True God.”
  • Ch. 1168 p.13: The bargain named on-page: “immortality and strength… but must obey orders in return” — administered personally by Imu at the Empty Throne.
  • Ch. 1168 pp.10–11: King Harald accepted it ~14 yrs ago and was transformed into a monstrous, scaled, horned “undying knight in service to Mu” — “a weapon,” “more than a monster,” “immortal.”
  • Ch. 1168 pp.12–14: The obedience clause is literal remote control — Imu controlled Harald via the Aurust Castle throne-room magic circle (Abyss Pentagram): “I’m being controlled, and Elbaph with me.”
  • Ch. 1168 p.13: Harald’s terms — he agreed to “be a slave” so “history would be atoned for.”

Chronology / structure

  • Tier 2 of 3 in The Covenant (Shallows → Depths → Abyssal).
  • ~14 yrs ago: King Harald accepts it at the Empty Throne; Imu later invokes the obedience clause to turn Elbaf’s warrior nation toward a WG war-fleet (Ch. 1168).
