Present-day Elbaf: a Holy Knight states he can enslave/mind-control a whole race by abducting their children — “simply abduct thy children… I can control thee at will… thou art my slaves!! ” — and that “800 years ago, thy kind suffered defeat … the nature of a race does not change in mere centuries… but history repeats regardless” (pp. 15–16). Gaban (with a young Shanks ) lays out the mechanics of the covenant with the Great One (Imu ) in Marijoa . It has levels : the shallowest (“Shallows Covenant ”) already means “we can’t resist as long as we’re within that freak’s range”; a deeper level makes one a full Holy Knight of God . Through the deeper covenant the Holy Knights gain: an undying body , superhuman strength , and the ability to generate an “Abyss,” a means of traveling long distances — in exchange, “no matter who you are, you cannot defy the orders of the Great One, whose voice will reach you at any range .” King King Harald signed the deeper covenant to add Elbaf to the WG and was then forced by Imu to slaughter his own guards while made immortal (“I truly am immortal!!”).
