Why this matters
Robin’s question reveals she carries prior knowledge of the D-clan before her Strawhat-recruitment — knowledge she could only have from Ohara’s banned historical archive. The question itself implies the D-lineage has a why-to-fight the world’s other factions do not. Luffy’s confused non-recognition (“‘D’?”) installs the structural irony: the inheritor doesn’t know his inheritance.
