The seed
First on-page articulation by an in-universe character that Luffy operates under narrative-protection.
Why this matters
The lightning-strike rescue at the moment of Luffy’s beheading is the first on-page instance of the narrative-physics-favors-Luffy mechanism. Smoker, as an outsider observing it, is the first character in-world to perceive that Luffy is structurally protected.
Pre-loads every later impossible-survival beat across the series:
- Marineford — Whitebeard intervenes against Akainu’s magma-fist
- Wano — Joy Boy awakening at the moment of Kaido-victory
- Egghead — final-message broadcast intervention
- Every later deus-ex-machina-saves-Luffy beat across the series re-keys to this Ch. 99 install
Smoker’s fate-recognition is also a character-tell — he is canonized as the Marine who knows the fix is in. His post-Alabasta debrief deference to Luffy, his Punk Hazard alliance-tolerance, etc., all re-key to this Ch. 99 install.
