Chapter 320: Ultimate Military Force

Summary

Still at the frozen sea off Long Ring Long Land, Admiral Aokiji continues dissecting Nico Robin in front of her crew. Having had “a closer look,” he tells the Straw Hats that the World Government thinks little of them — a small but troublesome “collection of troublemakers” — and that the one specific reason they are so dangerous “is you… Nico Robin.” He recounts that a bounty was placed on Robin when she was “only 8 years old,” because a bounty reflects not just a criminal’s strength but the danger they pose to the government: as a child she “betrayed people and escaped unharmed,” “took people in and used them,” and “survived in the underworld with that cunning.” The clincher: every organization Nico Robin has ever been associated with has fallen — yet she always survives, and now she has “hidden herself in this crew.” Sanji and the others bristle (“We don’t care about the past!! Cut it out, you jerk!!”), but Robin — rattled — attacks first, deploying “Trienta Fleurs / Clutch,” a thirty-arm spine-lock. Aokiji is an intangible ice Logia; he freezes her grip with a touch (“That wasn’t very nice…”) and counter-attacks with “Ice Saber” (a frozen blade) and “Ice Block” bird-and-bullet ice projectiles. He freezes the limbs of Zoro, Sanji, Usopp and Chopper all at once, warning their “arms and legs will rot” from frostbite, then freezes Robin’s entire body solid. He explains she will live when she thaws — “but be careful: if she breaks, she’ll die” — and demonstrates by knocking the frozen statue (the crew catches her in time). Usopp and Chopper are dispatched to carry the frozen Robin to the ship while the rest hold the line. • Robin’s hidden history laid bare by an Admiral. Aokiji tells the crew the World Government’s case against Robin: a bounty placed on her at age 8; as a child she “betrayed people and escaped unharmed” and “survived”; she “took people in and used them”; she “survived in the underworld with that cunning.” The most chilling line: “every organization Nico Robin has ever been associated with has fallen — yet she always survives” (pp. 2–6). First time anyone on-page narrates Robin’s serial-betrayal pattern to the Straw Hats.
