Profile
Mother of Ace and lover of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger. Lived on the island of Baterilla in the South Blue (Baterilla). To hide Roger’s child from the World Government’s child-hunt, she carried Ace in her womb for twenty months, holding off the birth by sheer will until the search had passed — dying shortly after delivering him “in order to save it… at the cost of her own [life]” (Ch. 550 pp. 16-17). In her dying flashback she entrusts the infant to Garp: “My unborn child is innocent, Garp! Take care of my son!” (p. 19). Carries the D. middle initial (Portgaz D. Rouge). Etymology note for the etymologist: “Rouge” = French “red,” echoing the joli rouge reading buried in “Roger.”

- Spoken on-page during the birth flashback (“Rouge!! Rouge!! Hang on!!”, p. 6). Having held the pregnancy ~20 months by sheer will to evade the Government’s bloodline-hunt, she names the baby — Roger had chosen “Gol D. Ace” (“Anne” if a girl) — and dies shortly after the birth (pp. 6-7).
