Chapter 1165: Reverberations

Summary

The chapter is a full flashback to the God Valley Incident. Rocks D. Xebec has become a monstrous, winged/horned “beast,” screaming to be killed — the transformation is called “the curse,” and Roger and Garp first try to break it and wake him before deciding they must put him down. Rocks’s rampage splits the sky and terrifies the assembled crews, who evacuate (“This is the end of the Rocks Pirates!!”). Roger, whose plan was to “steal Shakky and the treasure and hightail it out,” and Garp, who “came here intending to arrest you both,” instead team up against the cursed Rocks. Around the battle: young Kaido and young Charlotte Linlin feud over treasure (Kaido vows to make “a new crew where violence rules all”); young Monkey D. Dragon, part of the World-Government force, is horrified to learn it was a Celestial-Dragon human-hunt and commandeers ships to rescue the captives; Whitebeard/Newgate — his own crew “falling apart” — brushes off a fanboy captain, Polo Gram of the Polo Pirates; Gloriosa (young Grandma Nyon) escapes by ship; and Rayleigh and Gaban run off to help. A caption confirms the island is in the West Blue and “will never have existed.” Exhausted, Roger and Garp work out that only a critical mass of Supreme King (Conqueror’s) Haki can hurt a monster whose own Supreme-King guard “cancels out” theirs, and that the Color of Armament “doesn’t yield to the Devil Fruits” — a plan likely to leave all three down. Roger recognizes Rocks’s sorrow, tells the weeping beast he can’t console him, and the two unleash their finishers — Garp’s “Infinitum” and Roger’s “God of Fire: Ace” — in a world-shaking explosion that brings down Rocks D. Xebec. Narration: the Rocks Pirates cast “reverberations that shook the very world,” and the World Government “attempted to cover up everything that happened here.” Cover: reader-request illustration of Bepo sleeping on Zeus.

• The God Valley battle is finally shown on-page. Rocks D. Xebec fights in a cursed monstrous “beast” form, weeping and begging “Please!! Just kill me!!” (pp. 2, 15). His words, attitude, and expression “are all telling different stories” (p. 2).
• “The curse.” Roger/Garp recognize Rocks’s state as a curse and first try to break it / wake him (“Is there any way… to break it?!!”, “Just wake up!!!”) before resolving to kill him (pp. 8–9).
