Chapter 237: High in the Sky

Summary

The Going Merry is flung up the Knock-Up Stream column. Down on the Blue Sea, Blackbeard (Marshall D. Teach) and Jesus Burgess watch the Straw Hats blast away into the sky and laugh: their “prey” escaped, but Teach is unbothered — “This world… is one big, endlessly turning wheel,” and “if our will is strong… we’ll meet again.” (pages 2–4). The Merry breaches out of the column and lands not in any sea anyone knows, but on a sea of clouds — pure white, sailable on the surface yet bottomless and fluffy beneath. Nami names it: “This must be… the Sky Ocean.” The Log Pose still points up, and Nami pins their position as the “middle level of the Emperor Cloud.” (pages 6–8). Usopp tries to swim and immediately sinks through the cloud into the bottomless white below; Robin uses Ojos Fleur / Seis Fleurs to locate and haul him back up (pages 9–12). A giant cloud-octopus surfaces thinking Usopp is lunch, then deflates and flies off; Robin explains the local fauna are sky fish — creatures that “evolved differently from their aquatic cousins,” their bodies airfoils and scales like feathers, more buoyant than water, balloon-like or flat — and that Noland recorded them in his diary (pages 12–15). Chopper spots a ship, then a “bull running over the clouds” charging at them; an armored, lance-wielding figure on a flying mount comes thundering across the cloud surface, attacks the crew, knocks Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji around, and announces “I’m going to get rid of you.” He declares himself — “I am… THE SKY KNIGHT!!” (pages 16–19). The chapter ends on his reveal. (Page 1 is a cover-story page — Wapol’s Omnivorous Rampage, Vol. 2: “I Eat Trees”. Page 20 is the SBS “International Investigation Committee” feature listing the countries where One Piece was sold as of Oct 2002 — not narrative.)

• The crew breaches into a sea of clouds — the White-White Sea / “Sky Ocean” — far above the Blue Sea (pages 5–8). Nami: “This must be… the Sky Ocean.” (page 8).
• Cloud is a sailable medium with two layers: the surface cloud holds a ship, but the deeper “fluffy” cloud has “hardly any resistance” and a swimmer sinks straight through it into a bottomless white (pages 8–10). Usopp nearly drowns in cloud.
• Sky fish exist — fauna that “evolved differently from their aquatic cousins”: a giant octopus that inflates like a balloon, a “flat snake”/flounder, etc. Bodies are airfoils, scales like feathers, “more buoyant than water,” so they became “balloon-like or flat.” They have “teeth like carnivores.” (pages 12–15).
• Noland recorded the sky fish in his diary — Robin: “Noland mentioned them in his diary.” (page 15). Direct payoff of the Noland-was-telling-the-truth thread.
• The Log Pose still points UP (page 8) — Skypiea is higher than the Emperor Cloud level they’ve reached. Nami: “This must be the middle level of the Emperor Cloud.” (page 8).
• Blackbeard’s crew survives off-page from Jaya and watches the launch — Teach and Burgess on a small boat on the Blue Sea (pages 2–4). They vow to meet the Straw Hats again on the Grand Line.
• The Sky Knight appears — an armored, lance-armed rider on a flying mount, who attacks the crew and self-identifies: “I am… THE SKY KNIGHT!!” (pages 16–19). (Personal name Gan Fall is forward-canon, not given here.)

• Where exactly is the actual Sky Island (Skypiea) — the Log Pose still points up, so this cloud level is not the destination yet.
• Will Blackbeard’s promise (“we’ll meet again”) pay off this arc or much later?
