The seed
Why this matters
Oda’s preferred named-before-shown mystery-character template, escalated. Ace is given his first name and a long list of forward-canon-load-bearing facts (Blackbeard manhunt; ten-day Alabasta clock; Whitebeard-tattoo back-glimpse; Kureha’s will of D. lives on lineage-recognition) — but the D. middle-initial and the Portgas D. surname are withheld so the chapter can install the Will of D. doctrine without short-circuiting it through Ace’s name. The visual-silhouette technique (the Roger-execution / Dragon-Loguetown / D.-stranger-in-coat-and-hat composition) is now operationalized as the D.-clan-bearer visual register. Ace’s silhouette walking away (p. 6) is the chapter’s compositional callback to Roger.
Forward-payoff: Ace’s full identity (Portgas D., Whitebeard Pirates Second-Division Commander, Mera Mera no Mi user, Roger’s son) will be revealed across the Alabasta saga and the post-Alabasta Marineford-saga build. The chapter’s first-name-only seed is the load-bearing first-installment of the longest single-character-mystery arc in the series.
