Summary

An all-flashback chapter. At sea aboard the Oro Jackson, the Roger Pirates buzz that Shakuyaku has opened a bar on Pirate Island (Fullalead), which sits under Rocks’s control — and a crewmate observes to Rayleigh that Roger’s mood soured after Roger and Rayleigh’s cabin conversation. In flashback we learn Shakuyaku was the Kuja Empress Roger’s crew fought before she abdicated; ailing from illness, she slipped Roger a note (“Come and get me — Shakuyaku”) that Rayleigh reads as a love letter, and Roger admits the temptation. Roger rallies the crew (“Pillaging is a pirate’s true calling!!”) to descend on Shakky’s bar. Cutaway: Sacred Mariejois, 40 years ago — St. Figarland Garling reports finding an unaffiliated, resource-rich nation with a unique culture that refused to join the WG, and recommends God Valley as the venue for the next Holy Knights competition in two years’ time (“the great one will be quite pleased”). At the legendary Rip-off Bar on Pirate Island, Newgate drinks on Rocks’s tab, the crowd teases Rocks (“that’s the face of a new father!”), Roger bursts in as her “lover boy,” young Gloriosa throws herself at Roger, and Shakky faints from illness — but her decree forbids fighting at her bar, so no warfare erupts on the island. “But at sea, it was a different story.” In the Underworld of Elbaf, Rocks fights his friend King Harald: Harald means to bring Elbaf into “the circle of the world” by joining the WG and shedding the giants’ violent warrior past, while Rocks rages that the Celestial Dragons will enslave them and calls him a “soft coward.” Harald calls Rocks a villain, ends their friendship and calls off the talks. In a windmill house, a boy Loki is told “Rocks isn’t coming, Loki.” Finally, God Valley, West Blue, 39 years ago: red-haired twin boys are born — their father absent — and named Shamrock and Shanks.

New reveals

• Shakuyaku was the Kuja Empress Roger’s crew fought before she abdicated. “So this was when we fought the Kuja before she abdicated?” (p. 3); Roger’s crew “were so bummed out when she abdicated her Emperor’s throne” (p. 2). She was ailing from illness and passed Roger a note reading “Come and get me — Shakuyaku” (p. 3), which Rayleigh insists is a love letter.
• Roger and Shakky’s romantic tension is canon-textual. Roger: “I just don’t wanna be tied down… Well, I DO [feel tempted]!!!” (p. 3); at the bar he greets her as “your lover boy” (p. 7).
• God Valley was chosen as the Holy Knights’ next tournament venue. 40 years ago at Sacred Mariejois, St. Figarland Garling reports he moored at an island “rich in resources,” “an unaffiliated nation with its own unique culture” he “could not secure an agreement” with, and recommends God Valley for “our next competition in two years’ time”; “the great one will be quite pleased” (p. 5).
