Summary

With three hours left until Portgaz D. Ace’s execution, the whole world holds its breath. The scene sweeps across the Four Blues and the Grand Line — bars, churches, and street crowds in South, East, North, and West Blue all murmuring about Whitebeard (“the Devil is coming,” “Whitebeard is humming”) — while at the Sabaody Archipelago and elsewhere, reporters and crowds watch the execution on visual-transponder-snail monitors. At Marineford, the Navy’s fortress is staged for war: 100,000 elite troops, 50 warships ringing the crescent bay, heavy cannon batteries, the five remaining Warlords of the Sea (Hancock seated apart; Kuma, Doflamingo, and Mihawk among them), and the three Admirals — Aokiji [Kuzan], Kizaru [Borsalino], and Akainu [Sakazuki] — all under Fleet Admiral Sengoku. Ace kneels in chains atop the execution platform, awaiting his fate. Out on the Tub Current, Buggy and the Impel Down escapees — with Luffy and Jinbei aboard — blow through the Gates of Justice toward the battlefield. Garp tells Sengoku he’ll “wait below”; Sengoku, declaring he will “tell them everything,” seizes a transponder snail and broadcasts Ace’s true lineage to the world: Ace’s mother was Portgaz D. Rouge of Baterilla in the South Blue, who carried him in her womb for twenty months to hide him from the Government, dying to save him. Roger had been executed one year and three months before Ace’s birth. Sengoku names the father the whole world feared — Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King — as the crowd and Ace reel.
